Microsoft Defends Rare’s Skills

In one of a continuing series of interviews yesterday, Peter Moore revealed his true thoughts on one of Microsoft’s main partners, Rare. Basically, he flat out said that he didn’t think the studio had the right skills for today’s video game market. So now Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has stepped up to defend Rare and explain why they are crucial to the Xbox 360’s market strategy:
“Rare is a great studio that continuously delivers high-quality, award-winning titles for the Xbox platform and will continue to do so in the future,” stated the newly appointed head of Microsoft Game Studios. Rare plays a strategic role in delivering games and platform experiences that will help the Xbox achieve our long-term strategy of expanding the customer base to a mainstream audience.
“The studio’s current work that includes the recent release of another critically acclaimed installment in the Viva Piñata series, the reinvention of a genre and a franchise with the November release of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts as well as the avatar system they’re delivering as part of the new Xbox experience not only is indicative of the value they deliver to our business but proof positive to our partners and the industry at large of our commitment to this strategy and the platform’s continued success.”
That was…well, very PR-ish. Sadly, the fact remains that Rare used to be one of the leading developers in the industry; one of those names that could do no wrong. These days, they’re a studio you approach more with caution than anything. We’ll have to just see how the next Banjo Kazooie does.

im sorry but the xbox 360 is losing it
ps3 is the way to go now, the only reason xbox was good for like 3 months was because they had more games because it came out before the ps3
Actually no, the PS3 is still falling behind in both games and hardware sales. Last month the 360 sold 10,000 more than the PS3. Alot of people think that the PS3 is a more “casual” gaming console due to it’s games. At least 70% of the forums i’ve visited thinks so.
Nintendo is where Rare would have made all their money. Shame they moved to a company with a dying console.
I knew it- Serio is an X-bot.
fanboys at the top. shut the fuck up. no one cares which console is better. and now that rare is here, where is goldeneye remade?
Hey, i’m just stating fact. I don’t mind what console people prefer, as long as they don’t try and defend it with fake facts.
I doubt they’d do a remake of Goldeneye though.
@PaulC.:
Unfortunately, the 007 license is currently owned by EA, and I’m pretty sure Nintendo published Goldeneye, so a 360 remake is most likely NEVER coming out.
@Adeon:
360? A dying console? WTF?!!!
@StinkDude1;
How comes that Quantum of Solace is being created by Treyarch, Beenox, Eurocom, Vicarous Visions, and published by Activision?
I just don’t understand how all of a sudden all the Sony fanboys have decided that the 360’s time is up.
Do you not understand that the 360 is STILL outselling your beloved console even when its been out for an ENTIRE year longer. Are you blinded by your love for Sony? Or did you stab your eyes out after seeing how many exclusives Sony is losing?
No, its more along the lines that the Xbox’s exclusives are drying up. With the status of Team Ninja mostly unknown without their famed director, Bioware now being owned by EA (and thus probably no longer making exclusives) and Bungie doing something that probably isn’t Halo, there is some questions about the machine’s exclusives. That’s why people think the Xbox is a dying console. If Microsoft can’t introduce some major new games, they could be in trouble. They may not decline this year because of the price cuts, but it could be coming. Of course, let’s not forget the original Xbox, that Microsoft just dropped when the 360 came out. So if things go sour, they will move on quick, they have already proven that.
ok lets stop pissing in everyones outmeal. PS3 is 3.6 billion dollors in losses yes. why? blueray. x-box is made by a company who only did OS’s until someone there sead “let try and be gamers” and nindendo died when the genisis was king.
Now to the real point Rare has made great games for all of us to love so sit back and enjoy all the great games from all the makers and stop pissing and moaning about what system is the best(Dreamcast is) when the hell are gamers gonna just play instead of fighting over what system or game just f**king play.
Wow… you know which console in the best? None, go cry yourself to sleep. All of you arguing that one is better than the other is like being in the special Olympics, if you win, YOU STILL FAIL. As for rare, that sucks… I used to love goldeneye to death and now that microsoft has a foot so far up their ass, they will make some half asses games =(.
