Merriam-Webster Declares “w00t” Word of the Year; English Language Continues to Die Slowly

merriamwebster1 1 Merriam Webster Declares w00t Word of the Year; English Language Continues to Die SlowlyMerriam-Webster recently held an online poll asking people to choose their pick for the word that best defined 2007. And the winner is…”w00t.” Wait, what? That’s not a word. That’s just some term from “l33t speak,” which is essentially pig latin for internet nerds. Considering this was an online poll though, I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised that some internet-created non-word garnered the most votes. I suppose its better than some of the other options that were available, such as “quixotic,” “hypocrite,” “blamestorm,” and “facebook” (how “waterboarding” was left out, I’m not sure). Still though, this just seems like another example of internet culture taking the English language down a dark alley, beating it with a shovel, and leaving it to die. “W00t,” indeed.

    I see your w00t, and I raise you a w00t w00t!

  2. Fadeaway says:

No! Stop your murder of the English language! IT’S UNBEARABLE!

It’s like watching some simpering little hellspawn going up to his dying mother with the intent of pulling the plug as soon as no one else is looking.

I refuse to acknowledge ‘w00t’ as a real word. Oxford 4evah bros.

  3. Daniel says:

I swear, the next time I go to the drive-thru, I’m going to use w00t.

“Your order comes out to $5.17, drive up please”

    “w00t!”

I was discussing this with my friend Brendon, and how this — like truthiness — is an attempt to stay hip. It’s a shame they picked a word I got tired of using in UT99. When that was new.

How about bamboozled? Hornswoggled? I can pull things out of the air that are more interesting/better than woot.

Webster actually explained that “woot” is an acronym, which is something that I had no idea about.
