Popular Mechnaics has chosen Mass Effect as its number one pick for game gear to buy for the holidays. The game heads up the top 5 picks of must buy game gifts. Other titles in order are Rock Band, Call of Duty 4,Super Mario Galaxy and GameFly.
There are games you show your nongaming friends—like a few minutes of Halo 3, or a few hours of Rock Band. But when you’ve happily shunned fresh air, sunlight, and nondeliverable food for a week straight, you’re playing the gamer’s equivalent of heroin—a long, dorky role-playing game. And this month, you’ll be sprawled in unwashed darkness because of Mass Effect, the best RPG to ever hit a console.
The magazine also has 5 recommendations on what not to get for the holidays. Heading up the list of infamous titles to pass on is Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock followed by Assassin’s Creed, Clive Barker’s Jericho, Ghost Squad and the Wii Zapper.

“Mass Effect, the best RPG to ever hit a console”
I wonder if they will still be saying that in 5 years time? I’m not having a dig at the game but I do get he feeling a lot of reviewers get a bit carried away with new games. It reminds me of those people who when asked what their favourite film is reply with the name of a film they saw a few weeks ago.
Is Mass Effect a better RPG than any of the Final Fantasy games or KOTOR?
Norbit, Mass Effect actually reminds me of KOTOR but better… but the story seems very realistic the way it did it KOTOR.
I cannot say ME is the best RPG to hit a console, but it’s the best in the past 2 years for certain.
Mass Effect is such a great game. The story alone makes it GOTY material. Compared to say Final Fantasy or the the Zelda games, the story is more mature themed and gives it a ‘cinematic’ feel to it.
Mr. Sadistic.. the story is great. I did an article based on my loose thoughts on the story which should publish to the site tomorrow. It really had a cinematic feel to it. I would love to see them turn Mass Effect into a real movie.. just given to the right people who don’t make the typical game to movie flop. This story could really be the new Star Wars.
I don’t know about #1 game to buy… maybe 3rd.
It’s in the lineup for game of the year, and so far it’s done quite well for itself…it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if it took the number 1 spot.
It did everything it said it was going to do, it’s a solid title from start to finish.
