Mario Party 8 Recall

Over on The Tanooki, they site an article posted on the North Europe News website that Mario Party 8 has been pulled from UK shelves due to an “assembly error”. Apparently instead of the UK version, they received the US version which contains the word “spastic”. In the UK, “spastic” is a politically incorrect and abusive term for someone who is physically handicapped. It has been suggested that this was the cause of the original UK delay of Mario Party 8 . Nintendo assures gamers that they will be shipping a replacement sometime soon, although they failed to provide a more descriptive time frame.

You know, I lived in Ireland a few years ago and the terminology and slang over there is not so different than it is here, BUT there are some words that have much different meanings. There were quite a few times I made verbal blunders, much to the amusement of my Guinness loving pals, that left me red in the face for days at a time and no amount of alcohol could erase the embarrassment – and believe it or not, the Irish have great memories. To this day I am still reminded of a few instances that I have tried to forget, but I am not a large corporation like Nintendo. Twenty years from now, they will barley remember this little faux pas, where as I will still get a phone call once in a blue moon asking me if I have fallen on my “fanny” lately.

uk ppl are retarded man 1st they ban like manhunt 2 and now take this game out and stop a ps3 bundle being sold to a 15 yrs kid wow, uk needs to get up to date

  2. Daddy G says:

Sure just get back to me when the US doesnt freak out like its a terrorist act over someones nipple falling out on television then we can talk darling.

  3. Hopper says:

I’m sorry but the comment from “THE SWAT” just wreaks of ignorance, Do you think it was the whole UK as a nation who said lets ban this game?
A lot of people are unhappy with the manhunt ban, the reason why it was banned was because of the bias media who incorrectly reported a story which was based on fiction not fact. If the 15 year old was trying to buy a game which was rated 18 of course they shouldn’t sell it to him, its because of stores doing that in the first place that this problem came to light.

100% with you there Daddy G.

“and stop a ps3 bundle being sold to a 15 yrs kid wow”

What 15 year old has enough money for one of those in the first place? Like daddy G said when america can act grown up like the rest of us we can talk..

  5. Joelteon7 says:

Interesting that they’d stop an entire game for one word, but yeah, gotta admit the term isn’t exactly the nicest thing to say to someone around here. It also wouldn’t do Nintendo’s ‘family’ thing anygood either.

  6. Shy Guy says:

Oh man i dont giva dam about a word like spastic.
i want the game but they are bein gay and recalling!!!!

  7. The BT says:

Unfortunatly they have to recall it, the word is offensive to some people including some in nintendos key demographic, oh and to THESWAT (amzing how close t and s are in the alphabet) um.. remind me is manhunt 2 being published in the US let me think… No cause your censorship board put it at such a high rating that both nintendo and sony refuse to allow it on their consoles (that and there is no PC or 360 version anyway). And I can’t remeber GTA being pulled because of hot coffee over here unlike in america

  8. SoTired says:

spaz spaz spaz spastic spastic spastic…who freakin cares its a damn word and the people it makes fun of are probably too dumb to understand anyways…yeah…I’m an insensitive jerk…make fun of me all you want for that…I won’t cry over it. stupid british

  9. THESWAT says:

    NIGGAS what!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Rob says:

    1) In the USA, a lot of 15 year olds do have enough money for a PS3 – which is why they are allowed to buy them here and you arn’t.

    2) No one freaked out like that was a terrorist act. In fact no one even mentioned it until the next day, and that was just the news. Like 50% of Americans don’t even watch or trust the news. Believe what you see, not what you hear.

    3) The only reason Manhunt 2 isn’t coming out here is because no game company will publish an AO rating. That has been like that since the ratings first came out. It’s not a Manhunt only thing, notice there are no sex games in stores even though a few (at least for PC) exist that you can buy online, etc. Once the company gets Manhunt down to a Mature 18+ rating, then it will come out in USA, and it will still be disputed there. It’s not because we are more mature, but it’s because we know that games don’t turn people into killers. People turn themselves into killers.

I think that the government shouldn’t have to be out patrolling the streets for underaged kids buying innapropriate videos and games and such. The truth is this: parents should take more time to watch their kids and set rules and guidelines (like responsible parents should be doing). It’s the parents’ job to RAISE and DESCIPLINE their kids, not try to be their “friends”.

    Discipline.
