Manhunt 2 Becomes First Game Banned in Ireland

Game Politics has the latest on the Manhunt 2 worldwide bashing. Ireland is the next nation to join in an outright ban of the Rockstar game Manhunt 2. The title has set a new precedent as the first game ever to be banned from the Emerald Isle according to Midlands Radio.

The Irish Examiner has a quote directly from the Irish Film Censor Office (IFCO).

“IFCO recognises that in certain films, DVDs and video games, strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work.”

“However, in the case of Manhunt 2, IFCO believes that there is no such context and the level of gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence is unacceptable.”

Despite the fact the game is violent and the ESRB wants to keep it out of the hands of children, what about it really is equivalent to snuff films or porn? Why can’t I, as a mature adult with income and interest, walk into a store and pick up this title? The AO rating is as close as we get to banning these days because it means no one in the US retail chanels will sell it. Gamefly, a US online video game rental subscription service has also announced they won’t carry it.This might work out for Rockstar even more as they could retool the game and rerelease it at a more suitable rating level for all the organizations and they’ve already generated word of mouth, If not… there is always the Internet exclusive release idea – one that is pretty much unexplored at this point in gaming history.

Hmmmm, I’m waiting for the American verdict to go to a ban too…I want this game now, brilliant advertising (there’s no such thing as bad advertising, eh?)

I really hope Rockstar keeps this game as it is, if a country bans it, screw them, they can get a kiddie version of the game, cause I positive it’ll sell like hotcakes in the states, no way would the U.S. ban this game, it screams Americana of the 21st Century. I seriously think this game will make the Wii one hilariously naughty console after it’s release…I just hope some dumb parent doesn’t let their kid rent it, then stupid things would follow. Oh well it’ll happen, mine as well enjoy the macabre of Manhunt 2!

    Whatever…The insanity continues!
