Gamasutra has the latest figures released by movie company Lion’s Gate Entertainment. The company has a number of downloadable assets on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service and is claiming a 50% boost in profit from downloads.
“Our VOD revenues grew by approximately 50% in fiscal 2007 from the previous year,” said Lions Gate’s Feltheimer, adding, “our Internet delivered digital revenue grew by a multiple of 7 in fiscal ’07 compared to the prior year, although obviously from a relatively small base.”
Two films – Crank and Employee of the Month, both Lion’s Gate properties showed up on Major Nelson’s best seller chart recently.
I’ve personally only rented one film from the service so far, and I’m not likely to do it again honestly. There is something about the digital limits imposed that just don’t thrill me – especially when DVD offers special features and unlimited rewatching thanks to Netflix or purchase at Best Buy. Maybe I’m just not the right consumer for these services though – I like physical things.
