Latest PSP Firmware Contains an ISO Loader

Sony PSPYou might recall the post I made a week or so ago telling you about the new PSP firmware update that unlocked the processor’s full 333mhz of power. Now, it looks like there was even more in that update than we originally thought.

Apparently, the update also contained an ISO loader. That’s huge news, because it would allow users to play games that are stored on a Memory Stick. The loader is a file named np9660.prx, and was found in last month’s v3.50 and v3.51 updates.

With the loader, the PSP would play games without a UMD. However, there is no word from Sony as to whether or not this means they will begin offering games for download from the PSP store.

This is a really cool idea that could give the PSP a big boost that it needs in the sales department. Allowing users to download games to Memory Stick, then boot them up and play them whenever is exactly the sort of innovation that the PSP needs to set it apart from the portable crowd.
