While we at Gaming Today were not privy to the invite only preview for Killzone 2 last night at a local sushi bar, we did have a chance to watch the latest trailer for Sony’s upcoming sequel game. Like the footage shown at last years E3 we get some scenes of futuristic freedom fighters preparing for an assault on the Hellgast. While the Killzone series predates Epic’s Gears of War both games feature similar subjects and it looks from this cinematic that Sony is amping up the drama a bit to compete.
The actual gameplay animations shown appear fluid and lifelike. Assuming the last few scenes are in fact live game footage the more realistic look of the characters and opponents rivals the graphical finesse of games like GRAW 2. Dynamic lighting, particle physics effects and deformable terrain all show off the horsepower of Sony’s PS3 console but we won’t know until we see the game in the wild if they can keep the frame rate up during a major assault. Regardless what we do see looks impressive.
My only complaint is that the gritty in gritty realistic games like this for some reason always seems to translate to dull brown and gray color pallets. I realize this was established in the original Killzone but would it kill someone to use a more dynamic color scheme in one of these titles? Between this title, Resistance: Fall of Man and Gears of War I’m about all out of love for the color scheme. Click here to watch the HD trailer.

war is gritty and bleak, you want sunshine lollipops? then you are looking at the wrong genre
