Kevin Garnett the Cover Man for NBA 2K9

The former face of NBA Live has defected to its archrival. Kevin Garnett was announced as the cover star of NBA 2K9 during last night’s opening game of the NBA Finals on ABC, which KG was playing in as a member of the Boston Celtics. He had spent every year up until this season as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, which is the team whose jersey he wore on the cover of NBA Live 2001.
He didn’t win the MVP award this season (that went to Kobe Bryant), but he was certainly a top-3 candidate and is certainly deserving of this particular honor. The Celtics went from a 24-win team to a 66-win team in just one year — a record in the NBA — with KG spearheading their new efforts.
“NBA 2K is where it’s at! End of story,” said Garnett. “It’s the game I play, the game my friends play, and the game anyone in the league serious about videogames plays. NBA 2K is the real deal, and until 2K Sports finds a way to plant an elbow in your chest, it’s the closest thing to actually being there on the court. I can’t tell you how pumped I am to be on the cover of NBA 2K9 – it’s a real honor. Now watch out! Because this fall 2K Sports and I are going to deliver the best basketball video game out there, period.”
That’s not too far from what he said about NBA Live back at the turn of the century. “I am really excited to be in with EA Sports and NBA Live 2001 because I like to be associated with the best,” said Garnett back in 2000. “I think Live 2001 is going to be the most realistic hoops game ever!” But hey, what do you expect?
(You can probably tell I like writing about sports but don’t get to very often, can’t you?)
