gran turismo 5 Kaz Yamauchi Has High Hopes for Gran Turismo PSP

You could say that Kazunori Yamauchi, the guy behind Gran Turismo, is setting the bar pretty high. Joystiq got to interview him recently, and the most interesting thing to come out of it was his aspirations for Gran Turismo PSP. He mentions that in an ideal situation, there could be PSP-PS3 versus play, which is a pretty crazy concept.

Interactivity between PSP and PS3. One of the examples they showed at E3 two years ago was the idea of a rear-view mirror in a racing game …

*laughs*

… so that example probably not being the best application of the PSP, have you considered any other kind of PSP interactivity with the PS3 and GT5?

Well, one example would be for people to utilize replays of their race experience. Take that outside the home, whereas at home you would need the PS3, but they can take that away and share. Another would be – and we would need to do further research, we’re just talking ideals here – but it would be nice if we were able to allow people to compete whether they’re on the road or in their living room on the PS3, compete in the same race. Even though the visual qualities will be different depending on which hardware they’re on it would be nice if we could allow for that. Technically, we think we should be able to. Or another would be – a feature we had on GT4 B-spec – which is basically you’re the race manager. You don’t even need to steer the controller, you just set the car and let it go; you’re managing it. Another example would be the PSP would be your management tool: give it input and give it instructions and the car would continue on with the race.

I would get GT on PSP, if I have to have a PS3 then I’ve got two words for them.

    Yes please?

This game is going to be absolutely huge for a couple of reasons.

Firstly because the first GT game on a new console always sells more than the second. GT1 sold more than GT2 and GT3 outsold GT4. This is obviously because the first game on the new gen PS gives the big graphical leap while the second game is really just an update. I know people say it wont sell much because there aren’t as many PS3s as there were PS2s but there were less than 5m PS2s sold when GT3 was released and it sold 11m. There will be well over 10m PS3s sold by the time GT5 is released and I expect they will package GT5 with the PS3 for the 2008 holiday season the way they did with GT3 which is what I bought and which sold millions of PS2s.

The second reason is simply the addition of online play. It was already the best and most popular driving game ever and that was just racing split screen multi player or against 5 computer cars. 16 car multi player is going to be fantastic. That of course also enables the addition of online stats and replays & trophies being displayed in Home.

I’m sure the Top Gear link up and the PSP connectivity will raise a bit of interest also.

I can’t wait!

    more like ’suck it.’

not spending $500 to play a game on my psp.

I’m not sure why you think you would have to :???: (unless of course you are suffering from ‘Its a Sony article so I must moan about something even if its nonsense’ syndrome). For a start they have said on numerous occasions that there will be a stand alone PSP version released after the PS3 one. Even if you had to buy a PS3 you can get one now for $399 and that will undoubtedly be lower by Q4 2008.

  6. weclock says:

I was unaware that there would be a stand alone gt.

  7. abishek says:

Idiot’s!!!! they advertised the gt as a game for psp during its release .. now after me waiting for year’s they have idea’s on how a non existant game should be …..and every six months the release date is conveniently set further back.

  8. Norbit says:

“now after me waiting for year’s they have idea’s on how a non existant game should be”

They have been saying since last year that the PSP version will only be released after the PS3 one which is their priority. This discussion is just about how the two versions could link up.

  9. weclock says:

I don’t pay attention to advertisements.
