Kaz Hirai: Difficult Development on PlayStation 3 is Encouraging

It’s not exactly a secret that developing for the PlayStation 3 isn’t exactly a hassle-free experience. Quite the opposite, in fact. Normally, you’d think that’s quite a detriment, as it would seem ideal to give developers an easy route to getting their games onto the platform. But apparently Sony Computer Entertainment prez Kaz Hirai disagrees. In the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, he aired his thoughts on the matter.
“If you look back at the commentary we received when we launched PS2, there was a lot of talk to the effect that ‘It’s very difficult to program for’ and ‘It’s easier on a Dreamcast’. It’s happened before,” Hirai told OPM, acknowledging that PS3 is a more complex animal for developers to work with compared to its rivals. “If they came back and told me, ‘PS3? We can do this in a heartbeat,’ that would be worrying because what it is telling me is that we’re not pushing the envelope from a technology standpoint.”
Maybe it’s just me, but when you consider that ports of games from the Xbox 360 (Madden NFL 08, for instance) aren’t running as well on the PlayStation 3, I’d be concerned that development isn’t a snap.

Tell that to the developers spending millions to develope for a game and the hard work they put into it. Im not a Sony hater, but thats just dumb to say. First Ken Kutagari now Kaz? If I was Sony, I would never acknowledge the existence of other systems in public cause it makes them look like a greedy step child. Nintendo and Microsoft even seem to compliment each other.
Deep down, every good developer knows the future is based in multi-core systems like Playstation 3. Leading developers also recognize that if they don’t shine on the PS3, they will loose in the long run. Embrace it, drive it and own it. Rock on.
