Composer Jason Graves has lent his talents to creating an appropriately chilling score for Dead Space. With co-producer Rod Abernethy, he’s used the aleatoric musical style where parts of the composition are left to chance and improvisation. EA’s Don Veca , Audio director of Dead Space expressed his satisfaction with the score guaranteed to set your nerves on edge.
“Graves’ work on the Dead Space score is simply fantastic. The music is a key factor in the overall tense mood of our game. We needed an original orchestral score for Dead Space — Aleatoric in style, dark and dissonant, ranging from subtle creepy/eerie moods to completely cacophonous frenzies.”
The score is three hours of music using both orchestral and vocal elements recorded on separate tracks. The tracks are mixed in-game according to gameplay and situation for dynamic music that will keep the level of horror and tension going rather than becoming repetitive and monotonous. The right soundtrack is an often overlooked, but essential element of a gripping game. It sounds like EA has found the right man for the job.
