It’s Official – Sony Cuts PS3 Price By $100

PS3Well, not to say I told you so, but, yeah, I did. Sony has pre-empted any price cuts announced at E3 this week by announcing a cut of $100 to the 60gb PS3 model, bring the price down to $499.

In addition to this, Sony also announced that the $599 price point will now be filled by a new PS3 SKU, which will include an 80gb hard drive and a retail copy of the online racing game Motorstorm. This model won’t hit North American stores until August. Sony Spokesman David Karraker told the Associated Press that the larger hard drive plays into the company’s strategy of offering downloadable high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos. Karraker also said that Sony would be using E3 to focus on ways to increase the number of PS3’s and PSP’s that consumers own, and to expand the PS3’s game library.

This announcement comes as no real surprise to me. In stories and comments here of late, I’ve stressed the need for the price of the PS3 to be brought down. Now, it’s within $20 of the recently released XBox 360 Elite, and that’s definitely a good thing for PlayStation fans. I’m starting to get a little more interested in the E3 lineup they present.

So, that’s approx. £50 in the UK, even though it’s being sold at £425 now ($850)…that can’t be right, because that would mean we’d still be paying £375 ($750). Well, it’s a start. I’m still not getting one though. Not considering it’s still over double that of the Wii I bought.

  3. Norbit says:

Joelteon7 you should remember that the UK price is actually £350. The other £75 is 17.5% VAT. That means that a $100 ($50) price drop would bring the console down to £300 + VAT which works out at about £350.

That is good sony droped the price. it was a long time coming, and needed. lets hope this can boost sales, but it wont turn my hand to sony. I can predict moneysoft will lower the Xbox 360 in the near future to counter this price drop. I hope, it only gets better for consumers. and no matter what system we prefer or own. its good for us all. a $100 in my pocket is better than in Moneysofts or Sonys.
