It’s Heavenly Sword, Not Mediocre Sword
By William on Sunday, August 5th, 2007 at 8:43 AM PST In Sony

Yesterday, I mentioned how Itagaki of Tecmo was claiming that Heavenly Sword was “half-assed”. More and more videos of gameplay are surfacing that would make me lean towards saying that the title is not “half-assed” at all. Of couse, any game can use improvement, but I am starting to think Itagaki’s statements were simply too biased. The visuals look awesome and the gameplay looks intense. Some believe that the creators of Heavenly Sword have not been releasing too many details of the game for reasons. I can say that everything I have seen so far looks good. Of course any game ends up needing improvement, but this one looks like it will not be bad judging from the videos. Click HERE to check out some of the new ones.
There’s a reason why the game is called Heavenly Sword. Not Mediocre Sword. Not Slightly-Above-Par Sword. Heavenly. There’s no doubt that the collaborative work of Weta Digital and Ninja Theory has created some truly stunning and emotive visuals. But that’s not all! After the cut, you’ll see some intense gameplay against a boss. Those that were afraid that the game might be repetitive need not: it looks like Heavenly Sword is hiding a lot — and we can’t wait to see more as we get closer to its September release.

Looking forward to so reviews of this game…
Maybe you’re judging this a little early…i mean, look how much we were looking forward to red steel!
He said the quick time event-cutscenes were half-assed i believe, not the game as a whole.
Hey Jim, it’s grammar. Not grammer, chump.
This game looks fun from a hack’n’slash point of view. Nothing special in the videos. Looks pretty much like every other game like it. I just finished watching several minutes of videos and other than bosses, I never saw anyone of the bad guys attach her. They just stood around in a circle and approached one by one to get slaughtered. No one even swung their sword before dying, whats up with that? Even the boss didn’t really attack THAT much. The game play makes this out to be a simple ‘horde destruction simulator”. I have to say the videos are not getting me excited but I’ll reserve judgement until some hands one of my own.
I do think the game needs some improvements, but overall it looks like a good experience.. but how many games come out that don’t need improvements?… maybe 2-5 a year.
Nice to see freedom of comment works here. I regret using certain phrases in the last one.
Don’t like dissenting views? I’ll say it more plainly then.
Make up your mind William. You have published two pieces in two days and taken two different personal views on the content. Where is your journalistic integrity? Do you guys just delete every comment that does not favor you?
It’s because he’s a little boy that can’t stand criticism.
used cisco has summed up what I think about this game, purely from what we’ve been given so far anyhow.
Fact is, it LOOKS (I don’t know how many times I’m going to say it, I just don’t want anyone going on at me for having an opinion) like a cool hack’n’slash game, but with sweet-ass graphics. That’s all well and good, but genre’s need something new and different otherwise they get boring.
I think the game is worthy of an A title, rather than an AAA title (presuming there’s no AA title). It LOOKS great, but, aside from that? Not too much new. So, you get three different types of attack positions, done before. Fighting to maintain a kingdom. Boring. Give us something new and exciting. How about, we be the bad guys and we gotta kill the crap outta the goodies. That’d be good fun.
Fact is, like I’ve said, looks great, but that’s it. It’ll be good fun, but I can’t see the fuss.
jack, i could care less about criticism. His comment was deleted for being lame. I never agreed that the game was “half-assed”. Obviously Gothmog has issues with comprehending the English language.
I’m not really taking a strong stand in any direction for this game. People, particularly competitors will always leave comments to try and cause a problem. I think I made it fairly obvious that I did not agree completely with the statements in the last article and after watching some of the new videos, my opinion of the game has increased. Is there a problem with that?
Okay.. so what exactly is going on here??
LordGothmog: I’m not sure what was in your post but it is not the position of the site that we delete comments from the community without cause. I’m sure William had a good reason.
Regardless, tone it down. Act like adults and keep the conversations polite and respectful and we won’t have an issue.
The game looks and plays like a beta version of God of War. If that is heavenly for you then good on ya.
Yeah, I dont expect this game to be perfect. I guess Sony is just in a bind and needs to drive excitement and this game is on deck. I don’t blame them for making it out to be the next great thing, who doesn’t do that? Anyway, it looks like a pretty hack n slash and I’m sure it’ll have it’s momemnts. Hopefully it’s great.
As for the little debacle about gothmogs comments, I personally don’t agree with deleting any comments that have criticism unless they are obscene. Gothmogs comments weren’t obsence but they certainly were aggressive and it’s clear he was out to verbally assault the blogger (willie-boy, I think he said). Anyway, I personally wasn’t bothered by the comment but I certainly wouldn’t take anything gothmog said seriously after having read his little text-vendetta outburst. Reminded me of the kid in gradeschool correcting the teachers grammar. He thought he was smart but it just made him look like a nitpicking jerk.
used c. the initial comment had language in it. I also saw it as some sort of personal attack on either me or the site. Personally, I love debate and value the difference in opinions, but there are ways to go about it. It’s actually the first time I have ever flagged someone for their comments.
Life would be real boring if everyone had the same opinion as me. lol
I don’t understand why the internet is all a-buzz this weekend about this game when it HASN’T EVEN COME OUT! The amount of detail in the graphics, voice acting, and character animations (not just physical, but facial as well) in this game are amazing, so it deserves at least a little bit of respect as of now since so much of the developers time and effort have gone into it. How about we all just sit back and wait to see the final version of the game.
That could be a problem though, Daniel. Awesome that the game looks nice, that they’ve put in that much detail, but…game-play. I’m a game-play enthuthiast and I’ve seen nothing new to draw me in. I’m not saying this will be true for all others, but I suspect my local games shop will have some second hand copies of the game within the week.
@Joel: I totally agree with you. Gameplay is the key to every game. Doesn’t matter how beautiful a game is, if I’m going to spend 40+ hours on a game that has horrible gameplay mechanics, then it won’t be a very pleasurable experience. All I’m saying is not to pass judgment on Heavenly Sword just yet due to Itagaki’s recent comments.
troid, i believe he mentioned the cutscenes, but also aspects of gameplay. I never agreed with his statements. I simply believe that all games have negative aspects to them. I agree with Daniel that it’s too early for a definitive statement on the game in many ways. That’s why I tried to keep my opinion fairly open.
