It’s True - No Fatalities in Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics

mortal kombat vs dc comic

Back in September Jonathan posted an interesting notion about the new Mortal Kombat vs DC Comics game being devoid of fatalities. Today, an ex-Midway employee has confirmed this little fact, which to be quite honest has dashed my hopes of Scorpion ripping his mask off and burning The Green Lantern to death. Supposedly, according to this former employee, the game features “no fatalities and little-to-no blood”.

Then what is the point? I suppose, if you were to allow the MK characters to perform a fatality move, then Batman should be able to do the same thing - but that would be cool. He could swing his cape around, which would of course have razor sharp edges, and have it cut Sonya in half - or Robin the Boy Wonder could bitch slap Raiden to death. Just think of all the cool things they could do! Wonder Woman could use her lasso of truth to hang Reptile from a tree, The Flash could go into super speedster mode and literally jump through Kano and Aquaman could call denizen’s from the deep to eat Sub-Zero alive. The possibilities are endless, and it would make the game one of the biggest sellers of all time.

Alas, this will not be the case apparently. Check back for updates and release information, as I am sure something will be announced soon.

No fatalities??? WTF??? Maybe they will have some stupid button combination you will have to enter to allow fatalities like the blood code for MK1 back in the SNES/Genesis days.

    BOO no fatalities..

    Go Marlins!!!!

For the console kiddies! Destroying the games for the rest of us.

How is it “Mortal” Kombat if nobody dies?

Dumb, there is no MK or MK vs whatever without fatalities. I can see this hurting the sales. Why even bother its just another Street fighter game then. and not knocking Street fighter thats great also but MK was always known for the gore and fatalities. it wont be the same anymore. they should add in the combos and fatalities. MK is dead now to me, finish him. Flawless victory.

    Batman doesn’t kill.
Parents would also go crazy when seeing “safe” DC Heroes actually killing.
I’m not defending censor-crazy parents or anything, I’m just stating what they would think.
So yeah, there is no point.

Ya, this is seriously lame. I’ll still try it out though. But, I’m afraid that I will not by this one. *sigh* I was getting geared up for the next-gen MK title.

I’m actually not surprised. There’s decades of comic book lore behind each of these characters and most of the major ones (Batman, Superman) almost never kill anyone. It’s not about censoring violence, it’s that DC’s whole job as a company is to keep these characters’ basic traits intact; like not killing or being killed (even Superman was only dead for a few months). The Mortal Kombat characters were created around the whole concept that they kill each other, so they can get away with that; most famous fictional characters cannot. It’d be like having each match of Smash Bros. ending in a blood bath. Entertaining? Sure. Completely ridiculous in the context of the characters? Absolutely.

Well, despite being an avid comic book fan since I could read, I know the lore behind each and every one of these characters, and while it would not be in their characters to mutilate another human being intentionally, the idea of it still sounds fun. To me at least.

  9. VEX says:

    :???:
Enter the Mortal Kombat tournament and win it or die trying.
Isn’t that what is was all about?
Each fight leaves behind one winner and one bodybag, why is the whole basic idea changing?
I really hope they get things straight…
