Is The Sony PS3 Right For You?

People will debate console superiority until the end of time, but in the end it’s a personal decision. The Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 each have good and bad attributes. Many people ask me if I would recommend a PS3 for purchase. You simply cannot give out a blind answer though. It completely depends on what you are looking for. After the break below, I will highlight the primary reasons to buy a PS3 or not to buys a PS3. In the end, the decision to purchase a console needs to be yours. I definitely advise against the fanboy attitude towards systems. You might not like something until you try it.

The Games

The PS3 has a good library of games, but most titles are also on the Xbox 360. Certain games such as Oblivion tend to perform much better on the PS3, so that definitely raises some issues in the performance area. The PS3 is lacking in strong exclusive titles. The one exclusive title they do have that I am most fond of is Unchartered: Drake’s Fortune. Is it worth purchasing a PS3 just for that game or the handful of others? Probably not. Right now, the Xbox 360 has the best game library by far, followed by Nintendo and a distant Sony. I do believe that 2008 will be a good year for Sony, but you may want to hold off until console prices drop even more.

Movies

Personally, I rarely ever use a game console for movies. I’d rather burn out the laser playing games. Sony’s online service is free, which is a huge plus, but they are lacking content. For now, the big bonus is the ability to watch Blu-ray movies, which is superior over HD-DVD in most aspects. You also have to own a high end television and surround speaker system to fully appreciate the difference. If sound is your thing, you will notice a tremendous difference when watching a Blu-ray film. The PS3 is still a pretty good buy considering it’s an inexpensive Blu-ray player, but stand alone players are rapidly dropping in price and this will probably not be much of a bonus by 2008.

The Price

The PS3 is the most expensive console currently available on the market. As far as technicalities go, it’s a superior system and well worth the money. Dollar for pound, it may be a better buy than the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii for what you are getting. The Blu-ray ability is still the big seller. If you aren’t a big movie buff, then you should probably lean towards the other systems.

Downloadable Content

The PS3 is obviously not the greatest in this category yet, but they are rapidly expanding. By 2008, the library of downloadable games will start to catch up with Microsoft and Nintendo. Games like Warhawk make the PS3 something to take a serious look at.

Age Of The Gamer

The age of the gamer has a lot to do with console purchasing. The Nintendo Wii is obviously the champion of gaming for family and kids. I’d have to say the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 are more for the older gamers.

Overall Picture

All in all, the PS3 is an expensive, yet truly remarkable machine. If you are into movies in a serious way, this is the system for you. The game library is still lacking and it’s not quite as innovative as what Nintendo has to offer. For now, I’d recommend waiting until the next price drop and then it will be worth the purchase in almost every possible way. If you can’t figure out what system is right for you, just buy all of them if you have the money. We’re living in one of the greatest eras of gaming. In this generation, each major console has something great to offer nearly every type of gamer.

Wow I am amazed how many people refuse to pay the 50 dollar a year online service for xbox 360 on this forum. I have never had any trouble finding people to play Halo 3 or Gears of War. I play other titles as well online. I sold my PS3 to a friend because most of my friends are into to shooter type of games and they live all around the world. I was not happy with PS3 online service at all. You get what you pay for when it comes to online service. I waited over a year for PS3 to release some titles of interest but the selection seemed weak. As of right now I looking forward to Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Time Shift, Resident Evil 5, Dead Space (Cant wait looks better then any shooter I have seen yet will be released next year) Halo Wars, Kane and Lynch, Army of 2, Rock Band, F.E.A.R. Files, Condemned 2,GTA4, Prototype, and many more. This list alone is enough to keep me busy for at least a year if I get all of my game achievement points. Plus xbox live arcade games. The only game that I seek an interest in that the PS3 has to offer is the new Metal Gear. I have read rumors though that it might come to the 360 and money talks. I support 360 for the fact that it meets my needs and Bill Gates has actually been generous for countless acts of donations to charity’s. I like the looks of the Wii and will buy one for my son. When it comes to adult games though 360 is for me and obviously millions of others that are always online.

    @Jeg-
An install base of 110 million, and you say Sony has already lost? I don’t think so. Also, ‘AFFECT’ ‘COPIES’ ‘GRAN TURISMO’
If you have to call a person worthless to up your own perceived personal value, then I think you have a lot of work to do on yourself. I think you should visit a counselor.

    @almightymonky-
The PS3 does not have historically the best titles. Sony may have historically the best titles, but not the PS3. It will be getting some good ones, but that has yet to come.

    @ a note to all.

Oh my bad 9 month and 17 days no need to get your panties stuck in your crack. You call me a troll for what? I stated my opinion just as you have stated yours. 360 current and future release titles out number the PS3 from a lot of different aspects for my taste. In fact Sony is selling more Ps2’s then 3’s. I just don’t see paying 500 plus dollars for any game system that lacks online play. You can argue until a person is red or blue on this issue but 360 is far ahead of the game on online gaming. I was a former play station fan but for next gen the 360 appears to be were it is at. I am not sure were you live but in America you are free to say whatever you want. Go 360 (American product) screw Sony.

i was amazed that there werent any fanboy comments for a while :O after that of home entertainment lover, but again it is starting again and its getting stupid again

  6. Wow you just dont know says:

I am personally a fan of all gaming systems. All gaming systems have there strong points. PS3 is good for those that are movie buffs IMO. Personally when I go to buy a gaming system it is for gaming not movies. I would rather use my laser for gaming instead of movies. My next system may be the Wii just for a change of pace. I had an original Nintendo back in the old days and played it to death.

  7. Nate says:

    @ A note to all

    Yeah, you’re right. I guess i don’t have everyone’s opinions on a dot. I apologize.

But really, heavenly sword, worth that much of a mention? You really didn’t provide that much of an arguement about how great it really is other than its use of beautifully rendered cut scenes. When you throw words like “cinematic” like it scratches on the hind legs of other works that have earned that claim. As for hulk, it’s exactly like that. I mean, Hulk is a nice idea for a movie, but really, bill bixby did a better job with direction when he did. The movie was just a way to capitilize on the running hits with comic movies. Just is Heavenly words was a way to introduce the ps3’s capabilities. When I played it, I was just dissatisfied with the uber moves. In a realm of fantasy, the real meat is what we can really chew. Cinematic just isn’t the description I would paint for something like that.

And calling me a fanboy, I have all three systems as well and I’m finding myself far from the ps3–though not from movies of course. I was just questioning your choices for games because I’m switching from xbox and wii. Also, at least I’m not clearly yelling out my objections going to the point of profanity. I curse when I hit my finger with a hammer and yell, not when one of my FAN-favorite games are dissed.

  10. C0RW1N says:

    I own a 360 Elite and A PS3(60gig).
I like both but for totally different reasons:

The 360 is a gaming machine. A good one. Starting with the best controller avaylable today (on any platform) and having the superior online service (the 50 bucks are no big deal) and in the end it’s the system with the best gaming library which won’t change in 2008 ( MGS4 and Killzone2 won’t save a sinking ship).

The PS3 however is worth it’s money as a DVD and BR Player alone. It’s that good.
The loudish 360 won’t stand a chance, even with a free HD DVD drive. I’d rather get a cheap 200 USD HD DVD drive.
The multimedia parts of the PS3 are being constamtly upgraded so I’ll have more fun with it in the future.
    But gaming? Hell No !
The controller is for kids only. My thumbs will always get in each others way.
It hase no rumble (yeah Sony will charge some money from us for the dualshock 3 in the future but I’m not buying a 10 year old concept).
The online functionality is total crap. You cannot even chat with a friend without leaving the current game/program/movie or whatever. The mighty “cell” can’t do any multitasking? Gimme a break sony. Get your blu-ray player fixed so you may call it Playstation again.

  11. Norbit says:

C0RW1N nice try but anyone with a brain can see you are lying. You do not own a PS3 you are just another ignorant lying twat

    “MGS4 and Killzone2 won’t save a sinking ship”

Its sold as many units as the 360 had at the same point after launch. Just imagine how much better its going to sell when there is actually a reason to buy it.

There is an interesting interview with a Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton here:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26742.html

It seems MGS4 may have to use the dual layer 50gb disk when it ships. One reason for the jump from single to dual layer is the quality of the uncompressed sound.

Of course you could just stick it on 3,4 or 5 DVDs and not bother with BluRay but it obviously makes thing easier to have it on one disk. There is also the benefit that people have never seen mention. Piracy. You can of course download DVD games and burn them easily to work in modded consoles but try doing that with BluRay. 20gb + to download and then you need a BluRay burner to make the disk.

Take a look at this torrent site and tell me how many PS3 games there are to download:

    http://www.mininova.org/cat/3

  12. Norbit says:

I’m being generous so I’ll award 300 retard points to the first person who says:

‘There are no PS3 games to illegally download ‘cos it has no games’

  13. weclock says:

Norbit, it looks like you’ll have to award those points, to yourself.

  14. Norbit says:

Rules cannot possibly come into play until you have finished making them and that sentence was written as part of the rules.

I know you were trying to be clever but I’m afraid you failed. Have 200 points

  15. Joelteon7 says:

I’m simply not going to read through 65 previous comments, so, I’ll just leave my comments here.

Got a mid-range gaming PC, a 360 (premium) and Wii (and a PS2…). I play on the PC the most, but only because the Wii and 360 are downstairs and take up a family TV, so I’m fair and only play it when others don’t want to use the TV or find it too distracting.

Honestly, I have no place for the PS3. Not just physically, but game-wise. The way I see it is that this is the generation where getting two consoles is the thing, and that’s the Wii + 360/PS3. I have the former and just have no need for the latter. No games on the PS3 entice me whatsoever (apart from Wipeout, the best racing game ever made by humankind  ) being those out or still to come. Blu-ray means nothing to me, especially when they’re actually really expensive. The faults of the two I have are usually repaired by the pro’s of the other, so I physically have no need to get one.

That and I flat-out refuse to pay that much for a multi-media centre when I want a games console. The Nintendo boys had it right because there’s is the only machine that was born and raised as a flat-out games console, not any other type of malarky.

  16. Norbit says:

For all those people who seem to be under the totally misguided impression that the PS3 has no exclusives left here is a lit of the 95 I could find that are released or announced. I’m sure there are more that I missed. BTW its a damn sight more than are released or announced on the 360.

    ^You missed off Wipeout.

Including Wipeout, from that list, the only ther games that interest me are Driver (went downhill after 1) and Jak & Daxter. I wouldn’t buy a console for 3 games.

  25. Be happy says:

I think that everyone needs to give the console hating a rest. Personally, I’m happy that the three systems are so unique and that competition in the industry is so fierce. Just because you own an Xbox 360 doesn’t mean you automatically have to rag on the PS3, or vice versa. You should consider yourself lucky that you are part of this next-generation “golden age” of gaming, where amazing quality games are offered on all the systems. Your console doesn’t have to be the “best”. All the consoles are great in their respective areas. I’m really getting tired of having to defend my consoles from stupid raging fan boys.

P.S. I have all three, and love them equally

  26. MrMister says:

    He’s right, just like Wii/PC.

Be happy with what you have, plus a little competition never hurt anyone.

  27. Wow you just dont know says:

I agree with above comment. I just hate when I read bias articles stating this is the system to get while not giving the others a chance. I am glad though for the competition because the end result is a better product. I am happy with what I have.
