Is The Sony PS3 Right For You?
By William on Saturday, October 20th, 2007 at 8:10 AM PST In Sony, Sony

People will debate console superiority until the end of time, but in the end it’s a personal decision. The Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 each have good and bad attributes. Many people ask me if I would recommend a PS3 for purchase. You simply cannot give out a blind answer though. It completely depends on what you are looking for. After the break below, I will highlight the primary reasons to buy a PS3 or not to buys a PS3. In the end, the decision to purchase a console needs to be yours. I definitely advise against the fanboy attitude towards systems. You might not like something until you try it.
The Games
The PS3 has a good library of games, but most titles are also on the Xbox 360. Certain games such as Oblivion tend to perform much better on the PS3, so that definitely raises some issues in the performance area. The PS3 is lacking in strong exclusive titles. The one exclusive title they do have that I am most fond of is Unchartered: Drake’s Fortune. Is it worth purchasing a PS3 just for that game or the handful of others? Probably not. Right now, the Xbox 360 has the best game library by far, followed by Nintendo and a distant Sony. I do believe that 2008 will be a good year for Sony, but you may want to hold off until console prices drop even more.
Movies
Personally, I rarely ever use a game console for movies. I’d rather burn out the laser playing games. Sony’s online service is free, which is a huge plus, but they are lacking content. For now, the big bonus is the ability to watch Blu-ray movies, which is superior over HD-DVD in most aspects. You also have to own a high end television and surround speaker system to fully appreciate the difference. If sound is your thing, you will notice a tremendous difference when watching a Blu-ray film. The PS3 is still a pretty good buy considering it’s an inexpensive Blu-ray player, but stand alone players are rapidly dropping in price and this will probably not be much of a bonus by 2008.
The Price
The PS3 is the most expensive console currently available on the market. As far as technicalities go, it’s a superior system and well worth the money. Dollar for pound, it may be a better buy than the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii for what you are getting. The Blu-ray ability is still the big seller. If you aren’t a big movie buff, then you should probably lean towards the other systems.
Downloadable Content
The PS3 is obviously not the greatest in this category yet, but they are rapidly expanding. By 2008, the library of downloadable games will start to catch up with Microsoft and Nintendo. Games like Warhawk make the PS3 something to take a serious look at.
Age Of The Gamer
The age of the gamer has a lot to do with console purchasing. The Nintendo Wii is obviously the champion of gaming for family and kids. I’d have to say the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 are more for the older gamers.
Overall Picture
All in all, the PS3 is an expensive, yet truly remarkable machine. If you are into movies in a serious way, this is the system for you. The game library is still lacking and it’s not quite as innovative as what Nintendo has to offer. For now, I’d recommend waiting until the next price drop and then it will be worth the purchase in almost every possible way. If you can’t figure out what system is right for you, just buy all of them if you have the money. We’re living in one of the greatest eras of gaming. In this generation, each major console has something great to offer nearly every type of gamer.

The way I would sum it up is like this. If you want a console to play right now and dont mind paying to play your games online get a 360. On the other hand if you want a console with the best exclusives for the next year and a range of features that is constantly improving with every firmware update get a PS3. The PS3 is also the better choice if you have a PSP.
How is a PS3 more for older gamers, when it has one exclusive title? doesn’t that mean it’s just a poor ripoff of a 360?
I’m not saying it is a poor rip off of a 360, it’s clearly much different. But I think the way this article depicts the PS3, is a little one sided.
I do agree though, practicality should be the best motivator for a purchase. If you wouldn’t use it, then why get it?
weclock. Advising someone to buy a console you should really look at whats going to happen in the near future. I realise a lot of 360 owners are trying to ignore the lineup of games next year but its unavoidable. The PS3 has loads of exclusives out next year including the next games in 3 of the biggest franchises made. The 360 doesn’t. If exclusives count, the PS3 wins from now on. The 360 currently wins on price but the 40gb is going to be cheaper than the Elite and if you are playing online the extra cost of that on the 360 means the PS3 is actually the cheaper choice in the long term whichever version of both console you buy. The 360 currently wins on games but next year that changes and only the most deluded of xbox fanboys would argue differently. In terms of reliability and features the PS3 wins hands down because its reliability is fantastic and its features are improving all the time.
You’re right Norbit, those are very important points, however William decided to leave those out.
Remember, I was basing that false assumption off of only information given from the article.
I was on the fence and ended up picking the PS3.
The failure rate of the Xbox 360 is just awful. I probably will get one down the road, but not until they get those issues worked out.
The other big perks for me were: Included WiFi (My router is no where near my system). Blu Ray is a nice bonus but not an overall selling point (but the PS3 does a good job of upscaling DVDs as well)
I’m not really big into the fanboyism. I love my Wii, it’s my favorite party toy, and I’m looking forward to buying a 360. The PS3 is an awesome piece of hardware though. The Media Center functions were an awesome surprise. With the help of some great 3rd party software, I stream my downloaded movies and music off of my home PC very easily.
i just cant believe anybody would pay actual money for a PoS3.
whats wrong with you people?
i agree that the failure rate on early 360’s isnt acceptable but that word…acceptable? hmm when i think of sony that word would be the last word that comes to mind.
have fun playing your 3 exclusives with your 5 fellow PoS3 owners.
Decide who is going to play the thing and when. If you are going to share your system in-house with other people–The Wii is the party system. If you are going to play online games in a dark corner of your house alone… Well, let the other 2 edge it out. The Wii might be a good system when you are by yourself… It has those classic Nintendo titles…
If exclusivity is all that counts “home entertainment lover” can you really count any of the xbox 360 games as exclusives – personally i don’t see the need to buy an xbox 360 because I have a computer that functions on a far superior level when compared to the 360 and the failure rate is 0% that i am playing all the xbox360 games on. I have never understood the rush to get a game when it comes out, i could care less about being about to tell my friends i beat the game before they did so the 0 to 12 month await doesn’t bother me and i am playing all of the 360 (limited time if counting pc) “exclusives” on my pc with better graphics, frame rate and comfort. However i did buy the ps3 because in past experiences with the ps2, most of the games i enjoyed playing on my ps2 were not offered for the PC. I bought an xbox and only own 5 games for the life of the system, and three of them i never played because i had a better versions released on pc by the time i was ready to play it…
Wow, sorry this article sucks. This guy might be an aspiring journalist or something, but he doesn’t know crap about video games.
Blue Ray not a big deal? Its an extra 200 dollar investment in the system that xbox 360 wasn’t willing to make. The blueray not only allows for bigger games that allow for higher resolution (and a few developers have already come out with statements that some games can’t be made for the 360 b/c they’re too big)but allows you to play high def movies, and makes dvds look really really good. (saves me money in the long run). What really deterred me from the xbox 360 was the fact that it did not have wireless, high def player, charge for online gaming, and the biggest problem of all the FAILURE RATE. I’m a casual gamer, not hardcore. I would like to play games, watch movies and go online and play online (ALL FOR FREE). PS3 has a decent line up that will blow up in 2008.
If you really LOOOOOVE Halo get a 360, if you want to invest your money in something worthwhile that actually saves you money (blueray, wireless, harddrive, free online) then get a ps3.
hmm very good point.. as norbit already said, the PSP Remote Play is also a nice thing which you should include in the article.
my opinion:
Ps3 is just 2 word to describe amazing entertainment.. but still it needs quality exclusive games to get better with the sales.. but owell these games are coming out..
Lair, Uncharted, Afrika, Eye of Judgment, Final Fantasy XIII, EyeDentify, Gran Turismo 5, MGS4
personally i think MGS4 is gonna be the most awesome game for now
but still i need to play Halo 3
still need to buy a 360..
@home entertainment lover
im no fanboy and i really hate fanboyismm. and because of that i just have one thing to say to you:
have fun playing while you have the RRoD!!
They’re all fine choices, there’s no reason to insult one over another. Just because one isn’t practical for you, doesn’t invalidate it as being a quality piece of hardware.
For me, a PSP isn’t practical at all, I just wanted one because it’s a neat little toy.
The psp is fairly useless for me, I prefer my NDS, but I’m able to recognize that it is a fancy piece of hardware.
home entertainment lover….. ur a dousche, no1 can call the ps3 expensive anymore because the 40 GB version costs the same as a pro 360(from launch to like 2 months ago). the wii is destined to fail because all nintendo and microsoft do are milk the same franchises till the end of time… sony is the most fresh when it comes 2 new game ideas and bein innovative. the 360 is a joke with nothing good coming for ‘08 and a 33% failure rate and overrated exclusives… mass effect and too human?? dont make me laugh lol but gears of war 2 should be good… gaylo 3 is lame! GT > PGR… Lil big planet= system seller and the ps3 still has so much potential. i cant wait to see the day sony is back on top and these bias reviewers feel like idiots for bein on the wrong side
so what i meant was:
Ps3 is just 3 word to describe: amazing entertainment system
alright maybe i was being a lil over-zealous cuz halo 3 is alright. i was so hyped to play it and then i finally did and now i don’t care for playing it lol… but there are plenty of reasons to buy a ps3 and plenty of reasons to buy a 360 and plenty of reasons to buy a wii…. but honestly Too Human is just trying to copy God of War… Mass Effect could be an ok game i’m not very excited for it at all… Gears is just mindless shooting fun and dats how i like it lol… the cover system and all dat is awesome!!!!!! Killzone 2’s cover system is a very innovative cover system and then the motion captured hit/react system is amazing… but the wii is really not necessarily the best choice in a console becuz the controls are pretty annoying and the games are underwhelming… last gen graphics+motion control= affordable home arcade at best lol… i did want a 360 so badly at one point but the PS3 is the better choice at the moment because it has more to offer me personally as a gamer… i have a PSP too and would love to utilize the remote play feature as often as possible… the 360 doesn’t really have many amazing features besides the ability to play music off the HDD while ur playing ur games and the PS3 doesn’t really have many memorable features besides remote play and firmware updates which really don’t do that much… but the PS3 has 24 games that display in 1080P while the 360 only has 2 games that display in 1080P… but at this point in the console war all 3 consoles can still fail in the long-run
I think it’s unfair to call the Wii controls annoying, I think it’s fair to say that YOU find them annoying. Some people actually enjoy the Wii controls. Find them fun.
The Wii is a next generation console, albeit the graphics are only slightly better than last generation graphics, it’s not the graphics that make next-gen. It’s innovation.
here is the way i see gaming systems
-PC: is kinda like the cool older brother of every console, not always original but really fun to hang out with.
-X360: is the semi annoying younger brother of the PC except he has a poor immune system and gets a lot of fevers which lead to fainting spells.
-PS3: is like that rich uncle who has every freaking piece of electronics available and likes to taunt you with the fact his TV is 1080p and you still have a 13″ tv from 1976… except you don’t care.
-Wii: is like .. well i cant think of one for the Wii.. but its fun most of the time.
-Wii: is like you girlfriend. Fun to play with, doesn’t have a lot of depth, and plays well with everyone.
Wow, I think most of you are missing the point of buying a “gaming” system. The PS3 will have some exclusive titles next year, I know, but that doesn’t mean you guys can go and think every game the 360 has out right now is worthless.
There are so many great games out for the 360 now. And to say the 360 won’t have any exclusives next year is just ignorant. You guys need to look past the fancy gadgets the PS3 has and look at the quality games and online service Microsoft offers. The amount of fun to be had on the 360 outweighs anything the PS3 can produce next year.
Btw, why do you think Killzone 2 is going to be so good? The cover system and graphics? The last one sucked, so why should this one be any better?

seriously tho, i get the impression that this article was written by someone at sony, like “hey guys, come back! its not all bad”
the sad fact is once the main format for pornographic movies is blu-ray, then ps3 will start selling.
almost EVERYONE knows that.
(p.s i love my wii)
It never ceases to amaze me, the persistant nature of every fanboy on earth undoubtably leads to a downward spiral of ignorance and bias until the subject in question can no longer attain any sense of intelligence to put forth any arguement worth of merit.
I Have all three systems, and I’ll say it now, I play the Ps3 the most out of all of them, Heavenly Sword is a masterpiece and a true cinematic achievement that should be recognized justly as an entirely new dramatic art form. (I can’t stop playing it, it’s like a good movie or book you keep reading)
Warhawk is damn good fun. Halo 3 was mainly closure for me, I loved the series and the 3rd installment did not dissapoint me. But, I’m done with Halo and playing Skate, Warhawk and Heavenly Sword right now, oh and of course the good ol’ wii sports when freinds come over.
Anyway, the point I originally wanted to make is that no one knows the facts of life, but I can tell you one thing that is absolute: Reality is Subjective, in other words, different strokes for different folks and if you like your particular console, that fine, power to you, but when you start bashing other consoles you really lose all credibility in your arguement. Please people, let’s get this straight:
Sony did not eat your baby
Sony was arrogant but no where near the amount most of you believe(some “journalist” twist a quote, takes it out of context and you all run it shouting: PS3 Iz DE SUXXORS, SONY ATE MY BABY!
A question to those that do this: Do you ever think or do you just believe whatever is told to you?
Might I remind folks of this Editorial from awhile back:
http://news.filefront.com/editorial-our-world-at-war/
@ A note to all
You’re only playing PS3 the more now, because there’s a new game out for it that you like. I’m certain that as time passes you’ll play the others just as equally, because of all the great games coming out for each system.
@weclock, well, you are sorta right, though i do look forward to mass effect, the ps3 has eaten most of my gaming time, for me it’s the free online. see i don’t have xbox live, because i refuse to pay for it. plus ratchet, uncharted, and GT5 P are almost out, i think i’ll be playing my ps3 the most, but again remember that reality is subjective and the games i mentioned are games I like, i could care less about what others think of that.
BTW anyone who is still under the impression that the PS3 is selling badly should check out this chart which shows the sales of all 3 consoles from their first week onwards:
http://i24.tinypic.com/25f0do4.jpg
You can clearly see that the PS3 has matched the 360s first year sales and that’s with a far higher price, no killer software and its been on sale in the EU for less than 9 months.
Oh yeah, AND the 360 had no next gen competition.
I always seem to have to make this point. Before I do, my credentials ARE in order. I own all 3 consoles. I play all 3 consoles. I like all 3 consoles.
OK, that said….
All three consoles have pros and cons. In addition to that, everyone likes different games. For some people, the interactivity and party play of the Wii is what they want. For some people, they want the phenomenon that is XBox Live. Other folks want a home entertainment system in a box, so they buy themselves a PS3.
Of the three systems, I tend to use my PS3 the most. I play a little bit of everything on it. I basically use my 360 for Guitar Hero and Forza. I haven’t touched my Wii in weeks. It’s the one console I almost regret purchasing, simply because it doesn’t fit my playstyle.
However, none of this means that one console is better than the other. Having three viable consoles on the market means that the competition for your entertainment dollar is fierce. That means more good games for every console, and it also means that no matter what console you have, you win.
@Ron
That’s not true, what if you bought the console that doesn’t fit your playstyle, and you don’t have enough money for a new one (even with trade in-value)?
“If you can’t figure out what system is right for you, just buy all of them if you have the money”
No matter how big is 360’s catalogue and how “funny” is that WII’s remote, the graphics are definitely CRAP (compared to a PS3)
I wouldnt say that wii has better games than ps3, I have played my ps3 about 3h a day (often a lot more) but my wii is collecting dust with paper mario and exite truck. Why I dont have any more games for it? there is no other good ones available for my interest. Also if you look X360:s “GOOD” games (gamerankings/meta), they are all FPS/3rd person shooter games and the only one thats not is Oblivion and some other title that I dont remember.
And if you base your good game gategory by watching reviews you really get blinded since nowdays american review sites only give high ratings to fps games, expecialy sequels. If the only good games are fps games in next gen, then I gotta say that next gen line ups are pretty dry
It was a tough decision for me as to what to buy. Ultimately I went with what my friends were purchasing and that was the 360. I have since come to love this little box with so much power. I like to use the windows media center extender on the big screen in the family room and show off the kids pics to family. I like to run the music on my computer through the family room speakers. Most of all I like to play online games with my friends who live in other parts of the US.
I am truely amazed at how well the live system works for me. I naturally hope all my friends buy one so I can play with them and talk.
The truth is that one day all of these systems should talk with one another so it doesnt matter which system you have. I am sure PS3 will be great one day, but just not enough people own it to have a fun online environment yet.
Good Luck to you all and GAME ON!
I wouldn’t say any console has better games than the other, they’re different games. That’s like comparing a sandwhich to a bowl of soup? Which is better? Neither, they’re completely different.
Also, as far as Graphics being the most important aspect of the game, I’d like to draw your attention to the hand held wars.
The Pea Green Gameboy beat the 16 color Game Gear.
The Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance stand unattested.
The Nintendo DS is selling far better than the PSP (we all know that the DS is a tiny N64 with a second screen, and that the PSP is a ps2 on wheels basically).
The point I’m trying to make, is that the graphics don’t mean anything if it’s not fun.
Yes, the PS3 has power, but it’s not all about power. I’m not saying they’re lacking in the fun department, not by any means. I haven’t played a PS3 so I don’t know. But to say that one brand is superior because of hardware specs alone is very ignorant.
The whole idea behind consoles is that they’re simple to use, fun, and easy. Unlike a home computer, where you have to install, set up your keys, joypads, what have you, PC gaming is very indepth.
Anyway, to get back to the point…
The Pea Green Gameboy beat Game Gear, not because ‘oh he had this mascot, or they had pokemon’ but because over all the game boy was more fun.
Look at Tetris for Gameboy, it’s one of the highest selling titles of all time. A simple casual game, played in two colors, black and pea green (maybe a darker green for some of you), it proves to show that graphics do not make the console. It’s the games.
“That’s like comparing a sandwich to a bowl of soup”
No, its like comparing a bowl of soup to a bowl of soup.
At the moment Microsoft soup is an OK recipe but it has fantastic ingredients while Sony’s has a great recipe but the ingredients are a bit below par at the moment. Unfortunately the supplier for Microsoft got hit by bad weather so the ingredients are going to be a bit lacking from now on but Sony’s supplier has had a bumper crop so next years soup will be of Michelin star standard.
@A Note to all
You have all three and you play ps3 the most? I think you’re being bias because everyone would agree that the 360 has the best lineups at the moment. I’m wondering if you’re buying the right games for the 360 or wii.
As for Heavenly sword being a cinematic acheivement, that’s like saying the Hulk movie was great because of the masterful use of eye candy. Plus, the gameplay is uber unrealistic and God of War did it better. Not to mention the the pale old plot.
I would like to start by saying that the ps3 will not have as many exclusives as the 360 has, they are already very far behind and just because you say it doesnt make it so. they will release a gran turismo, but forza 2 is already out, they will put out socom, but halo 3 beat it to the punch, square will put out some final fantasy, but ‘mass effect’ will leave it looking last gen, and with gta 4 on both systems and exclusive content only for the 360 thats an even bigger loss, then you have monster hunter three being too costly to make on the ps3, and now being made for wii, when capcom made that statement it probably knocked off about 15% of all the indy companys making ps3 games, if capcom cant do it how can they? But to be completely honoust tho, niether xbox or ps3 have the majority of exclusives, id say both together they still fall short since the number one publisher and developer in the gaming industry is nintendo themselves it is clear that the wii has the majority of exclusives liek mario galaxy and smash bros… as well as fresh spins on all the other games that are identical on ps3 and 360, so get a 360 and a wii and enter the next gen the way its meant to be. ps. nintendogs has sold 17 million coppies, cherish the hardcore games while they last.
“I would like to start by saying that the ps3 will not have as many exclusives as the 360 has, they are already very far behind and just because you say it doesn’t make it so”
WRONG!
There are currently over 80 exclusives released or in development for the PS3 which is more than there are for the 360. Check it if you want, its true.
You are living in a dream world. Forza 2 is nothing to Gran Turismo. GT sells an average of more than 11m copies per game. If Forza 2 has somehow stolen some of its thunder why hasn’t it even sold 1m copies eh?. I notice you mention Capcom moving Monster Hunter to the Wii but you are apparently ignorant to the fact that a week later they announced Lost Planet is being released on the PS3. Mass Effect may make Final Fantasy 13 look last gen but millions more people will buy Final Fantasy 13.
The fact remains that the PS3 has sold as many consoles at this point in its life as the 360 had and it hasn’t even released any of its big games yet.
http://i24.tinypic.com/25f0do4.jpg
@ Nate.
I think you missed the bit where ‘A Note To All’ said he played the PS3 most because its free online and he doesn’t have Xbox Live. Without the live multi player element why would he be playing the 360 more than the PS3? You finish the 360 offline game then what? If you have online you can get far more long term fun from a game so it makes perfect sense for him to be playing the PS3 more if he doesn’t want to pay to play online.
*ahem*
I am a Wii/PC owner, and yes I’m a little fanboy who hates the PS3. (X360 is Okay.)
I have six games for all of you so you all shut up.
Halo 3, BioShock, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, KillZone2 & Metal Gear Solid 4.
I remember what a certain Industry Professional said awhile ago:
“ALL GAMERS ARE CREATED EQUAL.”
Each system has its own perks and doubts but, you shouldn’t bash a system about hardware specs or Exclusives. It’s the games IN GENERAL that make a system good.
And who cares if a company milks a franchise, people still buy the crap.
What I’m saying is… You left your [PS3/X360/Wii] paused. Go play it and have fun with what you chose.
PC > then all consoles.
I will say that I own a wii, and I love my wii. My only down fall right now is that there are not many games that i want to buy at this moment because of price. I have a limited budget as a college student, so I have to pick and choose what to buy. As I look to the future I think of 2 more exclusive to wii that will probably out sell halo 3. Super smash bros. brawl, The thrid reason I brought a wii, and you also have super mario galaxy. the other two reason where download content of older games and the legend of zelda.
I love to play FPS, but fps SUCK on every console imagined compared to a PC. The best 50 dollars every spent on video game would have to be two weeks ago when I bought Orange Box. You might say well you could have brought for 360, well TF2 a max 12 total players sucks. TF2 is best fun when there is atleast 8 people per team.
I have though about buying another next gen but there is no major selling point for me. THe Blu-ray is a stupid reason to buy a system. The number of people that own HDTV is very low and when next next gen come out be when it would matter. I know about 4 people that own HDTVs. I live nice town.
PC is thee best hands down becasue it is upgrade.
@Wii PC
“Halo 3, BioShock, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, KillZone2 & Metal Gear Solid 4.”
Halo 3: Sold well, but is not a next gen title, does nothing to mix up the FPS genre.
Bioshock: Sold well, but does nothing but reiterate what System Shock 2 did for the FPS genre.
SSBB: Mugen on A Console
Super Mario Galaxy: Can somebody say Ratchet and Clank?
And the other two you can have.
WiiPC said “Halo 3, BioShock, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, KillZone2 & Metal Gear Solid 4.”
That just shows why the 360 is a bit of a waste of time. Of the 2 games you picked for that console one is already out on the PC (and better on the PC) and the other will be at some point.
Pc>thenall said – “The number of people that own HDTV is very low. I know about 4 people that own HDTVs. I live nice town.”
HDTVs are now the biggest selling type of televison worldwide and have been for over a year. The ‘fact’ that you only know 4 people that own them does nothing to change that. HDTV uptake is absolutely huge.
If you want proof take a look at one of the UKs most popular electrical retailers website:
http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/subhub.do?categoryId=16&cm_re=Nav-_-HomeEnt-_-All%20Televisions
Click on the drop down box for ‘Traditional TVs’ and you will see they stock 4 rubbish ones (for people like your friends I suppose) while the ‘Plasma and LCD TVs’ section has 153 of which 109 are HD.
ok, the 360 has the best games, ps3 has reliability and the wii………….well, the wii has overhyped franchises like mario and metroid, of which, only mario was made by nintendo (metroid was purchased from another developer). the ps3’s blu-ray is completely un-necessary, has very few exclusive good games but great relibility (so far). just look at the orange box, 5 games on one dvd. the only time blu-ray becomes necessary is when you fill it with high-def video instead of using the game engine for video sequences (sony, im looking at you!). the 360 has the best game library (and will have for the life of the system whatever you say) but horrific reliability. and the wii is massively overpriced and full of ds ports and overused franchises (mario). now to the pc. it is possible to get better graphics, but itll cost you most of your savings, most of your time will go into making it work properly (keeping at the front end of tech is expensive and filled with driver/hardware errors) but the pc has the most games if you can get them to work. in short, if you get a 360 youll have great games, but itll break. if you get a ps3, itll keep working, but youll have no good games to play. if you get a wii, youll have an overpriced gamecube with fancy controls, and lots of recycled ds games (trauma center anyone?). that is the way it is.
“and will have for the life of the system whatever you say”
Its amazing how completely dumb some people are that they come out with unbelievably retarded statements like you just did. How can you possibly know that the 360 will have the best games for the whole life of the system? The release schedule for the PS3 next year is far better than the 360.
“get a ps3, itll keep working, but youll have no good games to play.”
As I said before. Look at the games due to be released. BTW PCs are only difficult to use if you are an idiot, which might explain why you think they are.
BTW the reason the Orange box can fit 5 games on one disk is because they are all mods of the same game dipshit.
There does seem to be a trend here. People who hate Sony all have the IQ of a Haddock.
Which is funny, because those same people all made love with their ps2 when it came out.
@ nate, obviously you missed my point, REALITY IS SUBJECTIVE. With that said, I play the games I like and I don’t give a shit what others think of that, The ps3 is the most played out of all my consoles because it has the games I like(see the keywords; I ME MY) You also can’t say statements like ‘everyone knows’ because you don’t know everyone, and my tastes prove that statement wrong. NOW FOR THE ANGER; HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT HEAVENLY SWORD, if you were a gamer and not a fanboy you would see that it is a masterpiece. Your hulk comparison holds no weight
@Norbit, thanks for exposing the various other erroneous statements nate made, I have always enjoined reading your comments on this site, you may speak some bias from time to time but your arguements are always valid
One very important detail you left out regarding the library of games available for the PS3 is that it can play all the PS2 games which has the largest library of games, larger than all the other 6th or 7th generation games combined! I have all 6 consoles, so if you have the money buy all three of the 7th generation, but if you don’t, a PS2 for $120, and a Wii or old Gamecube for $30-$70 are the best deals available. I don’t recommend the xbox 360 due to all the quality problems. I’m on my 3rd cnsole and still have problems with it and MS tech support.
The PS3 had the potential to be a great game system but Sony made two major mistakes: 1) making Blu Ray drives mandatory for all PS3s yes XBox 360 has HD DVD but that’s optional — I buy a game system mainly for games not the movies — I’d prefer to get a PS3 with or without Blu Ray not a PS3 with a Blu Ray only option. That’s not much of a choice there should be more options. Also Blu Ray is too restrictive with too much DRM — one reason Sony has never won a format war in the past is because they are way too proprietary and add too much copy protection. They insist on treating their own customers like criminals. DRM is not about stopping piracy but thwarting fair use.
HD DVD has its DRM problems too but is less restrictive and has made the right decision in allowing managed copying.
DRM will always lure more people to piracy. I would rather steal if I have to get content if the only legal alternative is to get it with DRM. If pirated media is DRM free but non pirated is encrypted with DRM I’d do with the pirated version just to escape DRM. I’d be willing to pay for it if I could without the DRM though.
DRM causes honest people to steal it doesn’t stop piracy it makes it worse.
I’d rather wait out this format war and hopefully HD DVD will win — that is better for consumers. Don’t be an early adopter they get screwed over by both sides — what if you adopt a format early and that format gets replaced by the other your investment is lost.
Both HD DVD and Blu Ray are backwards compatible with DVD but neither hi def format is compatible with the other. So if you buy a Blu Ray drive and a movie on Blu Ray but it gets replaced then with HD DVD as the standard you can’t buy content on HD DVD and play it on a Blu Ray player you have to buy the HD DVD player and your investment in Blu Ray is obsolete.
So my problems with PS3 are the inclusion of Blu Ray which I don’t need or want because of DRM and the high price — the price issue is becoming less of an issue as they bring it down to reasonable levels but the Blu Ray issue is still a lingering one.
Don’t forget what the music arm of Sony Corp., did in 2005 — just a few years back their music business Sony BMG sold music CDs infected with root-kits that installed spyware, viruses and nasty trojan horses on computers.
They were trying to sell DRMed CDs to prevent the buyers of their music CDs from exercising fair use rights and copying the CD to their computer, re-burning it etc, copying to iTunes and iPod or other media player software and hand held music players for on the go. I’m boycotting Sont Corp — including their electronics business — do you remember the battery recall issues with laptops — a number of batteries manufactured by Sony were defective sometime back including batteries for non Sony laptops that were made by Sony — and Sony knew this but would not make a recall until batteries for their own laptops needed to be recalled and then they had to deal with the issue that all their batteries for even other laptops made by other vendors faced the same problem and extend that recall.
Sony used to be a great company but they have ruined their image now and made a reputation for themselves as a big greedy business that only cares about making money and does not care about their customers or their satisfaction.
I have never owned a PS1 or PS2 but wanted to in the past and even if I bought one now I would never buy a PS3 though nor a PSP.
I’ll avoid buying Sony products whether its music by Sony BMG, movies by Sony Pictures or electronics by SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA.
I’m also wary of Microsoft they only make XBox game systems because they know every new console sale = one less reason usually to buy a new computer with Windows. MS already controlls the PC games market with Windows having the most games and now want to extend that to the living room with more games I say no. I have never owned an XBox or 360 and likely never will.
XBox 360’s Red Ring of Death is a joke — its like WIndoze Blue Screen of Death — I use Windows when I have to but say no to XBox.
What happened to nicer games though that weren’t too violent the new games teach kids to be mean — violent games teach people how to be violent. That is bad! I prefer games that aren’t too violent.
@Romeo-
Not all PS3’s are backwards compatible.
@manpan-
You never got to number 2)
PS3 games use blu-ray, that adds to their ability to distribute high level content. Your history of never purchasing a Sony product, in my opinion, proves that you know very little about Sony. I’ve owned a PS1 and it was still playing games perfectly until I sold it. I’ve owned 3 PS2’s (my first one broke, the second one I sold, and the third one I bought again because my at the time girlfriend wanted it), and I’ve been happy with each one, my first ps2 died because I didn’t take care of it.
Any kid who’s learning from video games needs to be smacked. I don’t know how many times I played the Sesame Street games, and I didn’t learn shit from them.
Also, I wouldn’t say Micro$haft has the market on PC games.
There are quite a few mac games, and with the company Transgaming, PC games can be played on both mac and linux hardware.
Mac = Cider
Linux = Cedega
lol @ norbit, 10 million sold hmmm wow amazing lets break down those numbers tho shall we norbit, 10 million sold of gt on a platform with an installed base of around 110 million compared to 7 million halo 2’s sold on a system with an installed base of 20 million.. well there you have it if there were 120 million xboxes sold halo would have sold 42 million coppies, so what were you saying about gt again? ohh and uhh yah like i said nintendogs has sold over 17 million coppies lol so tell me how sales effect the quality of the game? dont even reply, you are worthless. 80 exclusive titles, 3/4ths of them are downloadable content and the rest are no where near AAA titles like mass effect and mario galaxy, face it sony has lost.
As previously stated, all three systems have their pluses. I do have to mention that I would not buy a system based on future releases . . . you have no idea how good they will be until you play them, or if they will invoke a control style which is akward, such as the motion sensing capabilities in the ps3 controller. I was very dissapointed in most of the wii games, simply because I find the way they implemented the controllers to be unreliable and unweildy (i.e. Red Steel and Resident Evil 4). Also, just because a game is exclusive to a system does not make it good . . . there are plenty of craptastic games that only released on the PS2.
That being said, the PS3 has far superior hardware, and historically gets the best titles. Allthough it seems they are going to screw consumers over with no support for backwards compatability (read the disclaimer on the boxes of the new models), which on a system that costs 25% more then the competition seems a bit cheap.
Yes, I own all three systems, and honestly I play games on the xbox and ps about equally, allthough Blue dragon has been eating up the lions share of my time lately. The wii comes out when my gf starts harrassing me about being bored while I play pc games
