He Said He’d Be Back: New Terminator Game in the Works

Okay, that’s it; the video game industry is already taking a cue from Hollywood and rehashing old ideas. This is like the fifth new game I’ve heard about this week to be based on an upcoming sci-fi action movie. Anyways, Halcyon Co., who owns the rights to the “Terminator” franchise has announced their plans to develop a video game based on their own upcoming film, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Rather than outsource the franchise to another studio, Halcyon opted to instead create their own games division. They feel this will make it easier to control their intellectual property:
“We don’t want the game to be the stepchild to the film,” [co-CEO Derek] Anderson said. “They’re of equal importance, and we want both to be of the same quality and be the same compelling experience.”
Halcyon recently secured the rights to the works of famed science fiction writer, Philip K. Dick, as well and have already expressed interest in creating games based on his stories. They plan to release the Terminator game on all consoles about the same time as the movie in the summer of 2009.
Whoa. They say they plan to make the game the same quality as the movie? Awesome…oh, wait, wait, almost forgot. I’ve heard that before from pretty much every game developer working on a tie-in games. Lies, nothing but lies.
