Guitar Hero has done pretty darn well in North America; so well, in fact, that in North America alone, the franchise has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales in only 26 months’ time. That’s an incredible feat, and as Kris Pigna points out, “listen closely, and you can hear the subtle yet distinct howls of those who decided not to release Guitar Freaks in North America.” Oh, how that is so, so true.
“Guitar Hero is one of the biggest brands and one of the most powerful distribution platforms in all of entertainment today,” said Michael Griffith, president and CEO of Activision. “Guitar Hero’s popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium.”
It might seem like a strange notion to refer to Guitar Hero as a distribution platform, but Activision also announced that in the ten weeks since its release, Guitar Hero III has seen five million songs downloaded.
The series, which has sold more than 14 million units in North America alone, was introduced just over two years ago. It’s incredible to think that that Activision is seeing such tremendous success from something that’s been on the market for such a short period of time.

Can you say cash cow ? That’s a lot of beans, and it ain’t done yet !
