Guitar Hero III Online Play Not Looking So Hot (Nintendo Wii)

People have simply raved about Guitar Hero III for the Nintendo Wii for some time, but it looks like there are finally some negative aspects of the game starting to surface. Right now, the status of online play for the highly anticipated title is up in the air. RedOctane’s Bryan Lam was recently quoted saying “…we’re working closely with Nintendo for an online solution, though at the moment we’re unable to confirm the status of the online multi-player”.
It will be September in less than 12 hours. I think it’s a little late in the game to still be figuring things out. Apparently, online game play and downloadable content are still unresolved issues for the Nintendo platform. If they do not resolve these issues with a sense of urgency, I really do not see a single reason to purchase the Wii version, when the game will be superior on other platforms.

…gee…thanks. Well for the moment at least, it makes the whole Metroid Prime 3/GH3 decision a lot easier.
If by, “not a single reason” you mean it’ll be half the price and still a good deal if aren’t interested in online-multiplayer then I completely agree with you.
“I really do not see a single reason to purchase the Wii version”
1. Cheaper
2. Rumble/Speaker in Guitar
3. Anyone who doesn’t plan to use online
4. You own a Wii but no 360 or PS3.
yeah if you just plan to play it offline, i don’t see any issues.
used cisco. that’s true. I hardly know anyone who owns a Wii and not one of the other 2 systems though. I am sure there are people out there like that though.
Of the Current Gen Systems, I only have a Wii.
and I’m not too excited about online play, it’d be nice but not necessary.
But I’d probably get this version, before any of the others, just because of the price tag.
I had a wii sold it, so 360 version will do me just fine. I don’t think I would want to hear music coming through that crappy little speaker on the wiimote when I have surround sound anyhoo…
Im just glad it will be available for all system owners to enjoy.
I hate to sound anti-Wii which I am really not, but online capabilities really need to be a requirement for next gen systems. The only games I really don’t care about being online are ones like Oblivion, and honestly that would have ruled if it was online.
I realize some people are not into the online aspect which is cool, but I think the option still needs to be there. Halo 2 is a perfect example. I would have burnt out on that game a couple years ago, but it’s the fact that the game offers me a chance to hang out and catch up with my friends basically. The social aspect of gaming is really what appeals to me the most.
license to ill, You brought up a nice point with surround sound. A couple months back I got a 50″ television and hooked up a sweet surround sound system. The surround sound truly enhances your game experience ten fold.
In some games, particularly FPS style ones, I can actually hear the sounds so well that I know what side an enemy is coming up on me from before i even see them.
If you’ve got the budget, a good surround system should the first of your up-grades to any console. Even before that bigger screen. Hell, even a cheapo version at Wal-Mart is better than a TV speaker (or whatever itty-bitty thing will be in that guitar). And a nice thing is that your surround isn’t one system specific. It even works with your TV, PC or DVD player, etc… and can be used on your next console upgrade in a few years (you know, PS4, XBox720).
somewhat, very true. I actually have pretty much everything hooked into one system.. my 50″ tv is actually my computer monitor. I even have my iPod and other things rigged into the setup.
found this on a nintedo site, but it was posted april 16th ……..He also confirmed that Guitar Hero III on Wii contains features included in other versions of the upcoming game – such as online play and downloadable music.
If the current sales trend continues, there are probably going to be more Wii consoles in homes this Christmas than 360 and PS3’s combined. It would be stupid to not put a game as accessable as Guitar Hero on the Wii. Also, remember it’s not a graphically requisite title. The total experience revolves around the songs and the controller, period.
I think the Wiimote inside the guitar is a bit gimmicky, but that’s what the Wiimote is anyway, no? Rumble and sound from that won’t make the game experience that much better. But, downloadable content will.
If you are going to point fingers, point them at Nintendo. The Wii with all its pros and cons is in desperate need of a mass storage device. If anything, the DLC will hit a wall there. If you look at the storage requirements of just 3 songs on XBL, it’s around 40MB. That’s quite a bit of space for just 3 songs. You’re gonna need a big memory card for all that promised DLC (and I put emphasis on promised).
I can’t comment on the multiplayer aspect because I have no idea how great that feature will be. Basically, I’m saying multiplayer isn’t always that good a thing (or necessary). For now, I’ll hold judgement regardless of the console. It just seems like it would be more fun to play with a person standing right beside you.
i agree that someone beside you is a lot of fun with Guitar Hero, but I do like the online option when that’s possible. The Wii is really a console that I have never completely made my mind up about to begin with. I’m obviously more of a 360/PS3 guy. The lack of mass storage boggles my mind a bit with all the downloadable games, etc.
I also hope that GH3 for all systems can bring us better downloadable songs than say My Chemical Romance that was added for GH2 on Xbox Live. Perhaps if I was a 13 year old emo kid, those songs would excite me.
License to ill: “I don’t think I would want to hear music coming through that crappy little speaker on the wiimote when I have surround sound anyhoo…”
The sound for the game doesn’t come through the wiimote speaker, dumbass — it plays through whatever audio system you have hooked up to the Wii, like all the other games. The only thing you hear from the wiimote is the ‘twang’ noise when you miss a note, like a guitar string popped.
How can it be in doubt? I was just on the red octane website where they are accepting preorders or Guitar Hero III and the picture of the Wii bundle has the Wii Wi-fi Connection logo (the blue circle) on the package. So if it’s still in doubt why would they publish it the Wi-fi Connection logo on it?
Here’s the photo link (the logo is in the left hand corner.)

William:
I agree, online play with the Wii would make it that much better, more sales too. More sales, equals more players, more fun online.
CREAMY EJACULASHUNS!!!
It’s funny because I have been trying to decide between the 360 version and the Wii version. So far, here is how I have it figured out….
360
Wired Controller
XBL Online Play and DLC
Wii
10 bucks cheaper
Lack of Online and DLC
I am really thinking a ten dollar difference and more songs being added is an alright trade off.
I got the prices from Gamestop this week. 99.99(360) 89.99(wii)
umm… if you look at the box for gh3 on a website for wii titles, you will see a simple wifi sign on the top left hand corner… therefore, there IS going to be online play…
I’m not sure if should buy the wii version it would be a nice edition to my wii games but on my ps2 i have guitar hero 2 and guiat hero rocks the 80s should i finish the quadrilogy on my ps2?or start on thw wii
I only have a Wii and this game looks amazing (played the demo for it). From what I gather **RUMOR IS** you will need ‘friend keys’ to play online. Meaning you have to know your buddies key, and they need to know yours at the same time to queue up an online battle. It doesn’t sound like at this time, the Wii will allow you to randomly battle others. Some type of protection issue Nintendo said. They are capable of updating the firmware though at any time to allow full online play like the other consoles, just not at this time.
Makes me want to hold back and not buy it yet…I agree the lack of LARGE storage is an issue, but they could fix that too if they’d upgrade the firmware to accept the SD slot as a storage unit, or upgrade the USB to accept Hard Drives. I’ll pray to the Nintendo gods they act sooner than years from now.
Oh one other note, an Activision rep ‘DID’ say the Wii version would have the same downloadable content (at launch) that the others have. (i.e. The free songs if you buy the soundtrack, and other promos, etc). They didn’t confirm anything BEYOND that or after the fact.
I think its fine.
I mean, I would buy it. Theres really no reason anybody would’nt want the game unless they plan on using the internet option.
I think its cool because you can play it in a tottaly different room!
I also wonder how DLC is going to work out.I really think that they should make a wii hard drive that fits snuggly on the back of the wii in the usb port.If nintendo gave the wii hd graphics it would have blown away the ps3 and the 360 bacause of the motion sensing and the graphics.GH3 would be looking real nice
Yeah u guys shud make a site ware u can play online n ur keyboard iz tha guitar…n stuff

Don’t know where you people are from, but here in the U.S. everyone I know has been able to play it online with Wii since the game came out. Maybe it is the people trying to hook it up to the internet.
Good luck with that.
