Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PC) Patch v1.1 Lovin’

GH3 header

Yep, it looks like PC owners of Guitar Hero III are getting some update love thanks to the guys over at Aspyr (who, by the way, did an impressive job porting GH3 to the PC). This update seems to offer a handful of bug fixes, graphical tweaks, and minor feature additions. You can read the release notes after the break.

A question that is still being asked among the various forum goers is will Aspyr/Activision be putting effort towards getting DLC to the PC? Also, what about stat linking (PC) to the guitarhero.com website? Or is a PC platform too “hackable” for this feature to gel?

It’s well understood that the PC voice is a minority here. However, I guess Aspyr can only do so much within the feature bubble Activision has given them. We’ve heard Activision’s promise of bringing DLC to the Wii in 2008. And we’ve also seen the backlash of Wii owners for their mono-riffic GH3 purchase. With all of these varied cross-platform versions of the same game, are we gamers pretty much rolling the dice when it comes to choosing a game for a particular platform before hearing a final verdict? Or should we be examining the fine print closely instead of simply expecting each cross-platform version to be equal in features? I can’t help but laugh at the thought of game companies calling us spoiled little brats behind our backs. Anyway…

  1. Brandon says:

omg dude your pc is WAY under the minimum requirements… It’s gonna lag no matter what you need to upgrade.

  2. Julian says:

I have the same problem as Jon. Before the patch it would lag multiple times in a song but never freeze. After the patch, no lag but it will freeze for about 3 seconds and the speed up super fast to get back on pace. I meet the minimum specs and i’ve read a lot places that my video card is actually better in certain aspects than the recommeneded hd 2600…that’s why I got it. I’m definitely convinced that this is a problem with the game rather than my pc.

    Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 GHz – Latest Drivers Installed
    2.25 GB of Ram
ATI Radeon X1650 Pro – Latest Drivers Installed

I have the settings on Low Graphic Detail, 1024×768,
Crowd, Physics and Lens Flare on – I don’t even know what Lens Flare is
I’ve tried audio calibration, but nothing works

When i’m running the game, everything else is closed except Virus Protection.

I’m going to try re-installing the patch and rolling back my graphics drivers.

  3. Robin says:

Well it don’t lag for me ore something like that bu i have another problem!
I CAN’T SEE THE FUCKING FRETSBOARD OR THE START MENY!!!

  4. Ben says:

If you have no menu or fretboard, you might have anitaliasing and/or anisotropic filtering forced on by your drivers.

I found if you make sure to turn them off in Catalyst Control Centre it’s fine.

My card is a Radeon x1900xtx

  5. Nick says:

i’ve been all fine and good up until I set the game to connect to “online services”, since then, all day it has been lagging and freezing. It was a little tiny bit off before, but I could deal with it and still go for 100+ note streaks.

    My rig:

    AMD64×2 3800+ (64 bit patch installed)
    ABIT KN9 SLI mobo
3 Gb DDR2 800 MHz OCZ Platinum memory
NVidia 7300 GS (OC’d through Ntune)
*fancy case w/ clear side*(very important for performance)

Now, I’ve noticed once I set it to automatically connect every time the game starts, while playing, by myself, quick play, I notice my NIC going nuts as well as the switch(network activity). What the fcuk is all this about? since observing this, I’ve noticed horrible lag and freezing. I’m not utilizing the services, so why the fcuk is it generating network traffic?

  Is it a plot to invade my privacy and go through my files?  JK

  6. Chris says:

    Ma Specs.

Intel Pentium D 3.00Ghz Dual (so its 6.00Ghz)
    XFX nForce 650i mobo
2 Gb DDR2 (no clue what brand)
    NVidia 7300 SE/7200 GS

I dont know what ppl are complaining about…game runs fin for me on full graphics!!!

  7. John says:

This is why I download before I buy. It ran like crap on my system that met the minimum requirements, and so I didn’t buy it. hyuk, your loss.

  8. Alex says:

I don’t know what you people are complaining about. I don’t experience any bugs/glitches/pauses/lag in game and I haven’t installed this patch yet.

    My specs:
AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core 2.4ghz
    2gb ram
    Nvidia 8800GT 512 mb

    Windows XP Pro x64

  9. skin says:

im almost certain alot of the glitches (it you have decent hardware isnt because of the game. its because of your mainboard. if you have an asus mobo such as sthe ASUS M2NeSLI you will get pwnd and need a pci usb hub as stated before.
if you are experiencing troubles all you can really do is wait for 1.2 patch or just keep downloading different drivers some work really well with this game some dont

just be patient guys there will be a fix out soon. honestly think about how many people want to play this game on pc theres alot of cluey blokes out there theres guna be a fix soon i am sure

  10. JJP says:

Well, like the majority of the people here, I have lag and the screen jumps on me. I tried calibrating the video, which, improved it somewhat, but…It’s still not anywhere near to what it should be. I tried the game on high settings low settings, I set my CCC to high and low settings, and this game just lags and causes me to miss notes that I’m hitting right on the money for sure. My PC definitely has the minimum requirements. 2.5 ram, half gig video card… Nothing’s running in the background either. Just guitar hero and windows xp.

By the way, I have three different setups at home. I have 2 different vista setups, and an xp setup, none of which work right.

As for these people that are complaining about other peoples complaining, give it a rest. Good for you; yours works, just leave it alone. Nothing like rubbing it in people like me’s faces that some work and ours just doesn’t.

  11. mister says:

    Aspyr did a crappy job.
After many upgrades to my machine that cost more than a console the game now runs fine but the patch says game not found and after almost 4 months there is still no downloadble content.
Granted it looks much better on my PC than on a console but who the hell cares about graphics on a game like guitar hero ? just make it run smoothly on midrange machines and feed some new songs from time to time.

    really I am dissapointed.

  12. dski says:

idk whats wrong with u guys computer.. bu i modified mine so it can work on a 2 ghz mac book with boot camp with no graphic card and 1 gb of ram and it works smoothly…

  13. rogue71 says:

ive read through ALOT of these posts regarding poor performance of guitar hero 3 pc. in all but a few cases these people are complaining that ther computers “should” work. did any of you even look at the box and see what is required??? bare minimum spec on ANY game is not what you aim for, but rather the recommended specs. stop assuming things and freaking read before you complain. ive had this gamew running on 4 different rigs ranging from a bottom end 3700+ with 1 gig ram and a 7900gs (all settings low @ 800×600) to my gaming rig 6400 2 gig ram 8800gt 512 (all settings high @ 1900×1200) and my new htpc 5200 2 gig ram 9600gt 512. all asus brand boards. all using onboard usb ports. all using 1.1 patch. i get the odd lag on the 3700……duh..its at the bottom of the barrel spec wise for this game.

  14. Basyir says:

I have problem installing the patch. It cannot locate my game. I already re-install my game, but still the same error that comes up. Anyone can help me? Send me an email about it at basyir_ck1@hotmail.com. Please, I really need to know what’s wrong.

  15. Matthew says:

I have an AMD 3800+ (dual core, 4GHZ), Geforce 7600GT card (one of the lowest supported cards), 2 gigs of ram on Windows XP.

The game ran fairly well without the patch in 1024×768(?) resolution with everything turned on, until some of the more graphical stages. Now with the patch installed, at 800×600 and medium crowd setting, it works nearly flawlessly.

People need to remember that some video cards just are NOT designed for gaming. Also, 1GB of ram in WinXP might not be enough to run this as well as it needs to.

  16. Matthew says:

whoops typo there ^^ should read dual core, 2Ghz

  17. Jimbo says:

    Setup:

Gateway Intel quad-core (purchased new Nov. 2007)
Windows Vista Premium with latest service pack patch
NVidia 8500GT with latest driver (169.25)
    Upgraded to 650Watt Power Supply
    GH3 with 1.1 patch

before and after all the above patches the game would freeze mid-song and require a Hard Reboot to unfreeze the computer

the last frozen frame would have color dots all over and the sound would be stuck in a loud fast noise loop

    bad video card?
incompatibility between vista 32-bit and NVidia drivers?
    something else?

  18. Robert says:

I dunknow what you guys are talking about. Game seems to run at a smooth 70FPS with the following hardware
    AMD dual core 3800
    2 gigs Patriot DDR2 PC6400 Ram
    GeForce 7950GT
    Soundblaster Live! 24bit
    Vista Home Basic 32 bit

However i am pissed about no downloadable songs yet. WTH?

  19. Jimbo says:

Before all the patching sometimes the pc would freeze the same way on media player. After searching other forums I’m starting to suspect the video card:

    8500GT

some people to fix their computers (running vista or xp) have:
    1) rolled back their forceware driver to 173.xx
    2) or disabled hardware accelleration
    3) or disabled the Nvidia driver and allowed the Windows default driver

I’m considering abandoning NVidia and switching to ATI

  20. Chris says:

OK I need some help and advice here,
I have a HP pavillon dv6500 Laptop and i want to buy guitar hero but hearing all of these complaints about the game not working i dunno if i should just buy it for PS2.
    My Specs are:
    AMD Turionx64 1.9GHZ
    Nvidia 8400M GS 512MB
    Downgraded to Windows XP SP2
    and 2 gigs of Ram

Now before you computer geeks all criticise how this computer will not be able to run GH3…. Just to let you All Know i can play Crysis All on Medium graphics and get very good to decent frame rates. I can buy this game tomo but i dont want to be disappointed PLS SOMEONE tell me if i will be able to run it and Have FUn!!

    Thanx

    Chris

  21. that kid says:

    That Software did not work

  22. wzzzrd says:

Just installed the game, works great – love it. But how do you download new songs, are any available yet?

  23. Mike says:

Hmm. Having beta tested a few games, I have seen that the differences in motherboard chipsets to be a major issue. Twice now when a game is still in alpha I have helped identify problems with chipset compatibility. One being Mythos if you want to look it up, threads may still be online. It was found that the game would lag out and disconnect with anyone running nForce 3/4. nForce 2 and others like via were ok.
The slowest PC i have here is a 2.2Ghz AMD dual core with 2Gb ram and a 7900GS graphics card, running onboard network and audio. It has no issues with the game at all, even on high settings. I know many of you here could crush that system.

now having said that, the issue with Mythos was solved by tweaking the onboard net driver. Could a similar idea work here?

  24. Jobo says:

    I have a serious problem.
i installed a No-CD poatch because my mate wanted to borrow it, but the patch made the game suddenly stop playing sound half-way through a song. so, i deleted my entire GH3 folder (i couldn’t be botghered to wait for the installer to take 5 hours to realize i had installed Guitar Hero 3) but, when i went to re-install it, it was convinced Guitar hero was still install,ed, as the only options i had in the Setup was “repair” and “remove”. I tried both, and they both froze halfway through. therefore, i cannot install Guitar hero until i reinstall windows, deleting everything.

    Help Anybody?

  25. Mike M says:

    Hey guys,

I too have GH3 for PC and am noticing a very interesting trend… it appears that the high end Intel processors (Core 2 Duos, Quad Cores etc) with Asus motherboards and 8800GT’s are having the problems… well guess what – I’m having issues too.

I’ve recently upgraded my AMD 4600+ which had an Asus M2N-E Motherboard, XFX 8800GT 512MB, 2GB DDR2 800RAM, XP Pro which worked absolutely perfectly.. never missed a beat, patch installed fine and ran perfectly however a few newer games were being let down by my AMD 4600+ so decided to go the latest and greatest:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
    Asus P5K-Pro motherboard
    XFX 8800GT 512MB
    2GB DDR2 800 RAM
    XP Pro…

Guitar Hero 3 constantly has the jitters when the notes are going down the fretboard.. I’ve had a few lockups AND the latest patch 1.1 comes up and tells me that GH3 isn’t even installed on my system! I’ve been in touch with Activision with this problem and nothing has worked.. I even reformatted last night to start from scratch and still the same thing…

For arguments sake I installed it on the Macbook (windows side).. tried the patch and it too said the software wasn’t found! So.. I’m seriously wondering if this game is only optimized for AMD based systems? it’s pretty darn unplayable with the notes having the jitters as they go down the frets.. I’ve tried the latest NVidia drivers which are still jittering.. and every other game runs fine (3dMark 06 gets 12596!)

Please Aspyr/Activision.. release a v1.2 which fixes this! It’s not just a once off.. I paid $150 for this game and now it’s pretty much unplayable :(

  26. weevil says:

Has anyone got a solution on the “software not found” error with the 1.1 patch?

  27. RAWR says:

when i try to install patch 1.1 it says Sofware Not Found – Please Re-install Guitar ehro 3 blah blah .. i have reinstalled it .. checked my Registry and the associated files were there ..

  28. RAWR says:

this is not about the patch but it is about the setup
when i open it is says helpddl.ddl missing or something like that
but when i try the other setup at the end it says setup disrupted
    winsdows must be modified
and it doesnt work at all
    plz help me

  30. Weasley Ron says:

**** with the software not found problem*******

if you are using any form of cracked .exe file (nodvd for example) u will need to just delete the gh3.exe file and then go to repair option in add/remove programs with the gh3 cd in.

then u can patch. i suppose if u backed up the original .exe u could always just restore it..but i didnt so thats what i had to do and it worked just fine!

  31. Gunman40k says:

Just got the game…I must say that PC port is crap. Before patching it I had a bug when each song ended prematurely, altough the game treated it like everything was normal (I could get a 100% on a song without playing it completely  ) The 1.3 patch fixed it but in exchange now almost everytime I play a song, the game frezees for like 5 seconds in a random moment, then it speeds up like hell for 3 seconds and then it gets back to normal. It could happen even twice during a song  . I almost completely stopped playing the game since then

  32. Lolz says:

“Bought it, got home, waited about 15 minutes for the damn thing to load onto my comp, try to play and NOPE, “GH3 Does not support your graphics card” WTF? Waste of money.”

Rofl gotta love when people call a game a waste of money cause they are too stupid to read the min specs and only find out after they bought it that their 4 year old VGA isnt supported.

Not a waste of money, more like a waste of life. LEARN TO READ

  33. Aceed says:

“Made an impressive job porting the game to-” What the hell?
My specs are good, hell, I can run Crysis on low-medium hybrid without any major problems – but GH3 is just plain bullshit. Aspyr didn’t optimize the game AT ALL. If I didn’t know better, I’d think they had just popped in a X360 DVD of Guitar Hero III, Copied and Pasted the files and then slapped their logo all over it.

I know we’ve got to move on in hardware, but I have, and I find it hillarious for a PC port of a game to require the specs of an Xbox 360 to play firmly. Aspyr can blow me until they firmly patch away all this lagshit.

  34. Alex says:

I have no idea what you guys are complaining about. The game runs perfect for me.

AMD Opteron 2.4ghz (2.8 OC) Dual core
    Nividia GeForce 8800 GT
    3 gb ram
Vista x64 (Worked just as well on XP Pro x640

Every song runs smooth as butter and everything is perfectly in sync. Highest graphics settings by the way.

  35. Alex says:

    Double post for edits:

    Nvidia *
    x64) *

lol I’m OCD over that crap.

  36. thanks weasley ron says:

read through a lot of random ranting but at least your answer was spot on

  37. KM says:

Yes thank you SO SO much Weasley Ron!! I had been hunting for that answer for ages !!

  38. Tom says:

Yeah i hope this patch helps i get random bumps on lowest details and iv got a Nvidia 9800 GTX, Q6600 clocked at 3.14ghz 4gb ddr2 800 ram , 780sli motherboard so :\ i hope it does good.

  39. Gunman40k says:

Oh just a little update on my previous comment. I just noticed that the game is able to freeze even in menu and during loading screens. Everyone responsible for this fucked up port should be butt-raped with this so-called controller.

  40. Tom says:

When i try Patch GH3 it says Gh3 cannot be found? -.- seems alot of other ppl have been getting this 2 :( i hope it gets fixed soon its rather annoying

  41. nhommon says:

omg im stuck with the first version of the game.. version 1.0… AND THE DAM PATCHES DO NOT WORK! it says the software cannot be found… and i bought the dam thing for 90 dollars i need these patches to work cause no matter what i set the graphics to it always ends up lagging soooooooooooooo much! and to tell the truth it works alot better on the menus and selecting songs… and such.

someone can anyone please tell me why it isnt working?

  42. Xiphias says:

Tom and nhommon, scroll up and read – patches will say game is not installed if you have a No-CD fix on, remove it and repair/reinstall, or replace your backed up original .exe if you have one.

  43. AcemanX says:

I dont know what yall talking about but GH III runs smooooth on my pc, 8800gtx 2gb ram, cd2 e6420
xp but for some reason cant get to install on vista 64 bit, it almost finishes at the end then just stays there hanging
