Guitar Hero III For Nintendo Wii Is Mono Sound Only?

Reports have been flying across the web claiming that Guitar Hero III for the Nintendo Wii plays in mono sound only. If true, this could be a huge disaster for Activision and Nintendo. Guitar Hero III is supposed to support Dolby Pro Logic II quality sound. I have not been able to verify this rumor, considering I have only sampled the gameplay on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Single-channel mono sound is simply not acceptable in the year 2007, particularly on a game where the sound is probably the single most important aspect. It appears that many gamers in the Guitar Hero forums are reporting the identical issue. Hopefully, this is just a bug in the game that can be fixed with a patch. If not, the value of this game on the Wii drops to nothing in my opinion. Guitar Hero without proper surround sound is like car without tires.

It is untrue, as a man with the game, I can say that you can hear distinct audio coming from both sides of the room in my apartment.

  2. William says:

James, you can still hear mono out of multiple speakers. I have no idea how much truth is behind the current complaints.

  3. THONDOR says:

Uh yeah, this is retarded. My receiver indicates when it is receiving a Dolby singal and what type of signal it’s receiving- it’s recieving Dolby Pro Logic II. Yeah, they overlooked that it was “mono” when they plastered “Dolby Pro Logic II” on the box- wow, this is the dumbest thing I’ve heard all day. And I’m a bit dissapointed with myself that I even wasted time responding- but hey this kind of ignorance can’t go unchecked. I should start a blog of totally random shiit and plaster ads on it too. “It appears that many gamers in the Guitar Hero forums are reporting the identical issue.” way to cite your sources, seeing as only 16% (actual figure doesn’t matter, just using as an example) of PS3 users are aware it has Blu-Ray- could these Wii users, uh, have their equipment set to mono? Or perhaps did they put the DVD on a phonograph. Yeah, you’re an idiot- have fun rocking out your PS3 man.

  4. William says:

Thondor, who knows? It definitely could be the fact that some users are morons and simply have things hooked up wrong. I’m just reporting what’s being said in the GH forums.

  5. louis says:

Maybe the people who are reporting this should check their tv’s audio settings…

  6. THONDOR says:

Yeah- I checked http://www.guitarhero.com/forums/8/forum_topics/1258?page=1 (yes, now I see your sources are cited). The problem is you have to be 10% smarter than what you’re working with- I guess I finally understood how George W. Bush got elected twice. You need to have the settings on your Wii to Surround- which is default to stereo. I just put the game in and am getting distinctly different channels and my receiver is decoding a DPLII signal. I best a lot of these same players have a lot of appliances that are flashing “12:00″.

The only other possibility here is that perhaps there really are defective copies out there- as even if this is a case of people who have no A/V gear knowledge they should still be getting at least a stereo signal…

All I know is mine works and I ‘m going to play it now.

First off William, my apologies for the nasty post- didn’t see your link and chalked this up to fanboy heresay.

I am now convinced that people are really having this problem- this has to be something with defective copies (which still makes no sense since all copies are supposed to be exact duplicates of the “gold” master copy). If this was widespread I’d assume it’d be a bigger deal as modes like “face-Off” and “Co-Op” pretty much would not be able to function in mono (or at least I’d think people would notice) as the whole point is that your instrument is coming from a different channel than your opponent so it is audible to determine who messed up a note.

I mean, this thing sold really well, has been out long enough for people to notice this stuff, and that forum has 182 posts with a lot of repeat users posting multiple times. But Activision (if you check the last page or two of postings) is apparently acknowledging this as a problem. Is the Wii demographic more prone to technical issues with their equipment? Not sure. This is really odd. I really wish more posters would state what kind of equipment they are working with.

As I stated though, I am palying GHIII on Wii in what is definitely DPLII- I even went as far as inputting to my PC and running a multiple-channel Oscilloscope program to confirm the DPLII signal.

I wish more posters would be less dumb than you.

Norbit- what an appropriate user name.

You’re exactly like a shiity Eddie Murphy movie!

Good argument man- hopefully you don’t F*ck up my Whopper next time I see you working at Burger King.

  12. weclock says:

I thought THONDOR had very valid points Norbit, I don’t see what you’re getting at…

  13. THONDOR says:

Sorry- just thought of a better one:

Norbit- what an appropriate user name.

You’re exactly like a shiity Eddie Murphy movie!

But whereas Eddie Murphy went on to be the voice of an ass in Shrek- you’re one in real life!

    Fatty!

No real reason to toss out insults..

  15. THONDOR says:

weclock- true dat, something about video games forums just bring that out I guess, isn’t that like the 67th Law of Physics: All Video Game Forums Must Reduce Users to Eventually Accusing Each Other of Being Homosexual

Seriously, if you check the very last posts it’s always something like this:

    USER1: Yer gay.

USER2: Yer more gay than I am. PS3 baby!

Usually try to rise above that, but was playing GHIII on Wii (in surround  ) until like 6 am and am running on 2.5 hour sleep- all that rockin’ gets me fiesty.

  16. THONDOR says:

    Wait- HOLD THE PHONE:

You see what I’m saying? You could resurrect Einstein, put him in a video game forum for five minutes and all he’d come up with is:

E= PS3 has hardly any exclusives and a controller from 1994, same games from 1993 (that have been done better elsewhere), but has good graphics. PS3’s best game is the Transformers Blu-Ray (pretty easy, just have to press “Play” on the menu, and only 2.25 hours long, but GREAT graphics!) Yer mama squared!

  17. weclock says:

hahaha, well there’s a difference between insulting each others mentality, than insulting someone’s mother or a video game system. hahaha. :D

    RTFM!!!!! people!!!!

  19. Phosphor says:

@ THONDOR Stfu we dont care how much the ps3 sucks. This OBVIOSLY isnt a ps3 thread nor article. You stated your opinion on this article so stfu unless you have something else to say thats relevant to this. Seriously stop trying to fist Sony in the ass with all your bitching.

  20. Archimed says:

Look, there probably a mix of reasons for the issue.
    1) A majority would have gotten a working version of the game
    2) The majority of the minority that didn’t, has incorrectly set-up their AV cables
    3) A minority of the minority that didn’t have gotten a defective copy of the game

  21. Megan says:

Mk, my Nintendo Wii plays Guitar Hero III perfectly fine. I have surroud sound, and it’s perfectly fine. So obviously, the people sayin that it only has Mono sound are full of nice, smelly sh**. Ha. Haha. Ha ha ha. But no, really.

  22. chase says:

megan…ure gh3 for wii doesnt play on surround sound..no ones does its only mono…

  23. Bill Gates says:

….dudes…its?sooooo funnny looking gayasses like(welock whatever lee and all that)insulting each other

  24. Nexus says:

Look the only thing that plays mono is what comes out of the wii mote on the Guitar it self. I have the game it plays in stereo for sure if it plays in surround sound i dont know i dont have it hooked up in my main room. But the wii mote speaker on plays mono cause there is but one speaker. That is used for the missed note or a late or early note.

  25. LBCK says:

There is no truth to this at all. It’s amazing how many people believe crap just because they read it on the internet… (so it must be true, huh??)

I get true surround with mine, and as it is going through my home theater, It sounds real nice.

I’m guessing that most people with the mono problem just have their game console audio going directly to the TV, and still using the CRT style television that has what I call “pretend surround”.
