@Richard, just thought I’d point out that I Am Legend is a rather poorly done film based on the novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. It’s actually been made into a film two other times. So…it’s just as pathetic. And I agree, we need more originality in the film business. I wouldn’t mind an occasional comic to film, but they’re done so often and so badly that…I just don’t care anymore. I’m not too sure if I’m going to see Iron Man, though I like comics a lot.
Maybe if they made a movie worth seeing in theater I’d actually go

I like how they’re talking about video games taking money away from movies, as if the money belonged to the movies in the first place. Like a big movie comes out, and if anything interferes with that, it’s cutting into the rightful profits of the movie.

Face facts: movies aren’t the only things that cause midnight release parties anymore. You put out a movie the same weekend as a big video game release, and it’s like scheduling a TV show in the same timeslot as American Idol (sad as that is). Get over yourselves, Hollywood.

Personally with the movie and music industries being total dickheads about P2P sharing, I’m glad. I hope they keep putting out awesome games and take 100% of the public away from music and movies. At least games are worth buying unlike any movies/music of late.

I think the movie industry needs a big reform overhaul. I mean they reuse old movies and just remake them for christ’s sake. It’s ok to take an idea like a comic book or a book or a another piece of art, even making a movie based on a video game, but to reuse someone else’s idea is just well stupid. Also Ben Still is a horrible actor and not very funny, that’s why the movie failed. I mean what if they released I am Legend or Juno in the same week as gta4? Their box office sales wouldn’t decline because they were great movies. So you can’t blame a long awaited and excellent game on the sale of movie that’s a medocre reamake of a mediocre movie with a horrible leading actor/non-funny comedian.

I still plan on picking up GTA IV and watching Iron Man. I enjoy video games, but there’s nothing wrong with taking a break for a couple of hours to enjoy a flick with your friends.

Well honestly i dont think Iron man is gonna be anything but a crappy movie.. so they can blame GTA4 as a Excuse for it having poor sales i guess… maybe they can find something to blame Dare Devils poor sales on too.

@phil: games really don’t cost more than movies. For example, let’s say you take a friend to the movies.. that’s going to run you approximately $15 plus whatever snacks you get and most people buy snacks, so let’s say another $10. So far 2 hours of entertainment cost you $25.

the average video game is around $50, but you’re going to play even a short game for at least 10-15 hours. If we’re talking cost, a video game is far cheaper than going to a movie for what you are getting out of it.

its not about the people wnating to spend all day on the game at home. its to do with money more than anything. people will priorities as to what they want first. a game or movie. games cost alot more than movies. some people who buyy the game can’t afford to do both. thats why hes making the connection. not because of people not willing to go to spend more time on a game

there really are no solid statistics to prove the idea.. just probabilities. I don’t think anyone can deny the fact that v-games are becoming a top form of entertainment, so of course it’s going to cause a dent in other forms.

I think crappy movies cause low ticket sales – not game releases.. Halo 3 didn’t launch opposite anything worth going to see, just like Johnathan mentioned. Also high initial sales does not always mean people abandon the rest of their leisure activities. I don’t think we have any statistics or empirical proof to support that idea.
