There’s very, very little in the way of details about this right now, but Sony confirmed during its strategy meeting today (where the PS3 video service details surfaced) that the PSP will be updated to allow it direct access to the PlayStation Store. That sounds like a minor detail, but as any PSP owner will tell you, it’s been a hassle since the day the store was announced.

Originally, you needed a PS3 if you wanted to download official content to your PSP. Then, Sony made a jump so that all you needed was a PC to browse the PlayStation Store, and from there you could transfer the content onto your PSP. It’s still an annoyance and a seemingly unnecessary hurdle, so it’s good to know that we’re finally looking at a reality where you can access the PSP Store on the PSP. It sounds silly, but it’d be nice. And logical.

The release of such an update will be coming this fiscal year, which means it could be anytime between now and the end of March 2009. So you’re probably best off haning onto that USB cable for a bit longer, as the PlayStation Store for PC might remain your only option for the next nine months.
