Get In Depth With Levine’s BioShock

Gamers With Jobs has an in depth piece on Ken Levine’s BioShock. The article features all you ever wanted to know about Irrational Games’ upcoming “next generation” shooter.

Levine talks about what inspired BioShock, such as his frustration with the linear game play of most shooters.

Levine (like, I would imagine, most gamers) had grown frustrated with the sameness of the shooter world in the waning years of the 20th century. “I love shooters, I love Half Life,” he admits. But as a player, he was getting bored. “Think of a ball of string,” he says, calling on a signature metaphor he’s used repeatedly in the last 5 years. “Most shooters are a ball of string you unroll. You follow a path … there’s only one way to go, there’s only one thing to do.”

Levine goes into detail on Rapture his game setting which he promises is like nothing you’ve seen before. The city’s back story and the culture of it’s people is thoroughly fleshed out to give the gamer an immersive gaming experience. How the story unfolds depends on the moral choices the player makes. The environment is more interactive and AI more dynamic than most shooters. He also gives detailed examples of encounters player will face.

Anyone excited about BioShock should read this article.

Just picked up “Bioshock” for my PC last night. I would rather spend 50 bucks for a kick@$$ game that ISN’T HALO 3…I gave up consoles years ago and now love the power, flexibility, and just sheer thrill (or frustration) of upgrading and re-building PC components.

So far it is pretty sweet, yes I know it was on the 360 first, but I’m not spending $399+ for the same thing my PC can do, plus SO MUCH MORE! (movies, porn, gaming, e-mailing, chat, webcam, surfing the web, oh and some work to!)

BUT: After a few minutes I watched myself sitting beside him and
