Did George Lucas actually confirm anything? Jim Ward is the president of LucasArts, so if the "head of the Lucasarts" said something, that would be Jim Ward. I find it very interesting that the Fin24 article doesn't refer to anyone by name.

While I think it's very likely LucasArts plans to make or already has a Wii game in the works that incorporates lightsaber play I do have to express my doubts about the veracity of the source article. The English used in the article isn't very good to begin with and that makes me wonder if the reporter for AFP (whatever AFP is) got the translation right. Besides, the head of "the LucasArts" is Jim Ward. George Lucas is of course Mr. Ward's boss and owns LucasFilm and all of its divisions, including LucasArts, but Mr. Ward is president of LucasArts, overseeing day-to-day operations there as well as maintaining his role as senior vice president of Lucasfilm. http://www.lucasfilm.com/inside/bio/

With that being explained the article leaves me with the impression that it was Jim Ward that made whatever statement about LucasArts making a lightsaber game for Wii though since I could find no other first hand reports about this statement other than the one at fin24.co.za I really wonder if there was a language barrier and the reporter didn't fully grasp what the LucasArts rep stated.

"The strength of the Wii is really in the fun factor"

In order to survive, every game console's strength should always be it's capacity to provide FUN. That's what videogames are supposed to be all about, remember?

The only thing that could kill the Wii is if the fun factor dies out. However, this very same principle also applies to the 360 and PS3. They're mostly trying to push graphics or eye candy as the main reason you and I should play on those consoles. That isn't enough. If it's all graphics and no decent gameplay, you're basically watching a movie. Non-interactive, just passive.

So far, the Wii delivers on the fun factor. 360 does that too (minus the wiimote's advantages) but also delivers awesome graphics (a great advantage).

The PS3's high price point and lack of appeal seem to ruin any chance of having fun on that console. I mean, in order to take advantage of that system, you have to be like the guy who's working for a gaming mag/website who not only can afford a PS3 (with additional controllers plus games) but also owns an HDTV and everything else necessary to watch PS3 games in all their blu-ray glory. That means spending a small fortune (If I didn't have any responsibilities like paying rent, the car and school, I could afford a PS3. But I rather be responsible :) ). Anywhoo, according to Sony, it seems that gaming has become some elitist sport. They seem to cater to rap/movie/tv stars or waste of space starlets like Paris Hilton. People who buy such consoles based on the cool factor of the said console... and not because of the fun factor.

As long as the Wii continues to meet the need of all the people who just wanna have fun, it will survive despite it's GameCube 1.5 graphics. Hell, it's been years since the DS came out and people still have fun with it.. regardless of it's pixelated graphics. In the end, it's all about having FUN. And that is what made the PS2 such a great console. It wasn't the most powerful. But it was affordable and it provided hours of fun.

And there is nothing wrong placing opinions on articles. However, by doing that you run the risk of becoming the next gamesarefun.com website. A place where users use news stories as a pretext to biatch and hate each other. Kotaku can balance it just right by having mostly un-bias writers. Or at least they have a sense of humor. A weird sense of humor ;)

Truth be told the difference between the Wii/PS3/360 is only minor, but people hype the difference so it seems huge. The lightsaber game will be good as it is symbolic to Lucas Arts and if the light saber game looks bad, they look bad.

I believe people are allowed to share an oppinion in a news article as long as they are not trying to force it onto anybody. Heck, i let anyone know that i am a Nintendo fanboy.

It's not a style. Opinion simply doesn't belong in a news piece.
"I think", is the last thing that belongs in any credible news report, as good news reports should attempt to be as non-biased as possible.

Whenever news writers and editors wish to express their opinions on a subject, they write editorial articles, rather than slipping opinion into their news reports. Such articles aren't at all uncommon, but they're clearly labeled as being editorials, because they are -not- news.

dedalo, that's why we have a bunch of writers here with different styles. I happen to throw my opinion around from time to time with my articles and I make it obvious that it's just my opinion. I think a site that had all fact based straight up news all the time would be rather borings after a while. I also happen to like Kotaku...been a fan of their site for some time.

in all honesty, they Wii shouldn't be compared to 360 and PS3. They are in a different class. Where the Wii really shows it's weakness is on 3rd party titles also available on the 360 or PS3. The person above who said the PS3 is already fading away could be right, but I also doubt it. The strength of the Wii is really in the fun factor.

I'm sorry if my opinion attached to this article bothered some people out there, but it is what it is.

"well.. there really isn't much of an article without an opinion"

WTF? Is this another Joystiq/Kotaku wannabe website? Where they place opinions attached to every article? Heh! Heh! Guess so!

About the Wii... Give it some time dammit. It's been out less than 6 months (4 months in some markets). Same amount of time as the PS3. And the PS3 has nothing worth spending a single dime on. The Xbox360 is a way better investment. It's cheaper and it actually has good games for it.

And you're wrong about the Wii fading away. The PS3 is already fading away before your eyes. Not many exclusives, no good games and costs a lot of $$$. So there's a better chance of the PS3 dying than the Wii having a similar end.

And that's pretty much the opinion of every gamer/analyst not under Sony's spell or payrol ;)

...which is false...

a news article is supposed to be without opinion, any sort of opinion fouls up a news story.

The subject was that George Lucas confirmed that there is a Star Wars game coming out for the Wii which will let the player wield lightsabers. Yet over half the story is about how good or bad the consoles are in the writer's opinion, and which one(s) will "shine" in the future.
