Gears of War PC Has a Small, Fixable Issue

If you picked up Gears of War for the PC this week and tried to go online with it, you should have been prompted for a title update. But due to a small problem, you’re probably stuck in a cycle of downloading the update and never quite installing it. Luckily, a fairly easy fix is available; you’ll simply quit after downloading the update, and the update will be fully installed next time you start the game up.
Here are the exact instructions, courtesy of Gamerscore Blog:
- Start “Gears of War” for Windows (from Start Menu)
- Once the game starts, press the “Home” key to open the Game for Windows — LIVE Guide
- Sign-in using an existing Xbox LIVE account, or create a new Games for Windows — LIVE account (this will redirect you to a browser window, if you choose to create an account)
- Once signed into LIVE, the user will be prompted to update the Games for Windows — LIVE version on their machine. Select the “Yes, Update Now” option
- Wait for the opening cinematic with the Epic Logo and the Microsoft Games Studio splash screen to play
- Once on the main Title Screen, press “Enter” to go to the Main Menu
- On the Main Menu, quit out of the game
- Once you quit out of the game, the Games for Windows — LIVE System Update will kick off. Wait for that install to complete.
- Once that is complete, start the game again. You will have to re-login to Games for Windows – LIVE again
Microsoft is currently at work on a new update that will rectify the problem, but this simple fix should cure the problem with minimal effort.
This will fix the stuttering problem:
Go to the following directory :
\Gears of War for Windows\WarGame\Config\
Use a text-based editor to edit the following file:
WarEngineUserSettings.ini
Change the following line:
OnlyStreamInTextures=FALSE to OnlyStreamInTextures=TRUE
This will fix the stuttering problem.

have you installed dx10 for XP (alkyproject dll on system32 folder)?
if you dont know search these files and erase them:
c\windows\system32\
d3d10.dll
d3dx10.dll
d3dx10_33.dll

That is just to fix some of the stuttering problems, doesn’t fix the crash unfortunately. Sorry!
I’m still waiting for some kind of fix for the stupif crash myself. Play fine for a few minutes, then boom it craps out. But, less graphics stuttering now at least.

wth……… just bought the game…. waited for this for years…. AND THIS IS WHAT I GOT….. i didnt even see a monster….. the game crashed and it has the “ERROR REPoRT” thingy…….. wth is WRONG????

Had that problem too 20 seconds into it. It’s no problem if (for some reason) you start it right from the games folder (instead of off a table top icon or disk startup). Don’t know why that fixed it but it did.
But now deep into the game I’m having the same stuttering and stalling crap problems everyone else is. Why the hell don’t these people test what they release?
This problem is not bloody smal and sure as the pope is a catholic it aint fixable as yet.

I’ve been getting the same problem with this game. I’ve waited a long time as well(and whoever said they’ve waited years, GoW has only been out for little over A year). Crashing every five minutes or so. I got really lucky once and it didn’t crash for about 20 minutes, thought I had cured it, but all was for not. Some one said that they were having a problem with their video card? It was an X1950 PRO I believe, to whoever said that, that is your video card overheating, not crashing. Clean the heatsink. I would like a fix if someone can find it, I’ve been looking for one as well. Xefon, your link has no files in it, I would very much appreciate it if you fixed that so I could test your fix. Waiting for a patch/user fix at the moment. Fucking Epic.

I would repost, but I based the info off of a crack. So I dont really know the legalities. And For 90% of people it doesnt work. I have fixed 5 so far though. Try this This is the just of the trick I used, I just tweaked it. Get the razor911 NoDVD Crack and and open up the file and Paste Here “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\WarGame-G4WLive.exe” It fixed all my probems, but I did windows update, the live update, new forceware, and open the ports on my router. I am just pissed because I got the Ware from Razor and its in spanish, and It sound like crap. Even though I can now play it, I want it in english. So and english patch anyone. I am going to buy it now I know it will play but it will be friday. I test games befor I buy them. Best luck to all. And I don’t know about you guys but I am a pc guy, but I did have this for the 360 and had every achievement. I love this game. I thought I would be much better wasd’ing the game, but to tell you the truth I think this game was easier on a controler. Just me.

Again, if your having issues, try editing the code, explanied here http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=243203, you need to scroll through a bit, but it eliminated the stuttering, and it has not crashed yet. It seems to work for nvidia as well as ati.

For those who are still having problems, there is now a patch at the official gears of war website, manual download, you do not need live.
Still doesnt work with the GOW patch…still crashes after 10 secs of so.

It doesn’t matter how good of a computer you have(as stated by someone earlier) I have one of the fastest machines on the market. One of the biggest things I’ve noticed & people w/SLI also agree(I run cross-fire w/VERY high end cards $750 total in just video cards) You have to turn off SLI or crossfire & it will reduce the stutter substantually. This is a fact. Also Kane & lynch uses microsoft live or whatever it’s called..just like gears of war & I have to turn off crossfire for it or it is EXTREMELY slow & stutters as well. I’m still able to max everything out on both games, but the point is I have 2 cards for a reason! Running: Asus p5k deluxe w/core2duo 6850 @ 5.0ghz & 1333FSB w/4gigs of crucial ballistix tracer RAM @ 1100mhz. Zalman cooling system, xfinity ultra power supply 2x 2900xt video cards. WD 500gig sata HDD w/16mb cache @ 7200rpm & seagate 320gig sata HDD w/16mb cache. 2x samsung lightscribe, dvd RAM & everything else burners. 1 sony 20x dvd player. 1 sony floppy drive & 1 iomega zip drive And a very customized case. So like I said it’s not your computer, it’s the game & crossfire or sli being engaged. Good luck.
my video card isnt great but this game should be able to play without lag on my computer on medium setting so i lowered it to look even worst then halo1 and i still get lag like crazy

all you have to do to fix the 15 second crash is open the game through the startup icon located somwhere in program files/gears of war
I found that if I disabled PDVDServ.exe in the task manager, everything works fine.
Hope that helps someone, as it took me two days of installing, uninstalling, searching, trying different combos of applications, mb drivers, video drivers, etc before I figured it out.

I installed the game but there was no folder put under program files. how do i fix this? Also i have the crashing problem that ive read alot of other people have too. i downloaded the patch but it still doesn’t fix it. is there a way?
When I start the game, it freezes on the splash screen. Annoying as hell!
I’ve found that V-Sync screws up my game real bad along with some of the high texture settings. But other than that I’ve been playing it 1680 x 1050 on high/medium settings. I’ve beat the game twice now. Once on casual once on hardcore. The Brumak is pretty bad ass looking, but he’s not too hard to kill. Now on to insane mode…

Wtf guys? i mean come on. I had no problems at all except at the beginning for a while before i formated my computer for another reason. I had to click GOW like 3 times but not a god damn problem is with mine. I don’t have a new system and i could run the thing on high!! Here is some solutions maybe everyone know but i will say it anyways
1. Make sure u don’t have 500 processors running in the background (max: 30)
2. Make sure its a legal copy of the game
3. If u have a system that came out 5 years ago. GET A NEW ONE
4. NO GOD DAMN DELL PLEASE I AM WARNING U NOW
5. Vista is not a good software to be running game but some people might make it work
6. Make sure that there is no: Viruses, Trojan, Spyware, etc. (Some of the anti- software like AVG might not pick up all the viruses. Also, Avg i had just deleted the files even if it was a critical one. So, when u had XP for a year or so and had a few viruses. Good idea to reformat your computer because there could be hidden viruses or missing files.)
7. MAKE SURE THAT THE REQUIREMENTS ARE THE SAME OR BETTER ON UR COMPUTER.
8. Some hardware may not be compatible with some of the newer software.
9. If u could play crysis demo… that is not a achievement. If u played Crysis at high level of graphics and beat it then good for u.
10. Some software could also interfere with the game too. MAKE SURE AGAIN TOO TAKE ANY SOFTWARE THAT IS NOT NEEDED. EX: AIM (WTF Y ARE U TEXTING DURING GOW)
11. There could be a 11
12. SOME updates too could interfere with ur software/hardware.
13. Make sure u leave the game to install the updates. And check back for more.

Hey guys, I’m running the game at 1440 by 900 resolution with all the video options maxed and if I reduce the resolution or change anything at all it doesn’t change a damn thing about the stuttering issue. I have 4gb of ram in a dual core processor with a 8800GTX nvidia graphics card. I’ve tried going all the way down to 800 by 600 resolution and it doesn’t make a damn difference at all. It is definitely a software issues that will hopefully get fixed with a patch someday. Don’t hold your breath.
P.S. I’m using Windows XP, though I bought the Vista upgrade it can’t play my games for —-!

all that was running and the game still crashed so i downloaded that patch i got told to and STILL dint work.
i have read there is a patch out i dont know if it works but it seems microsoft have accepted it at last YAY so am buying it tomorrow and hopefully it works YAY and if that cr33per says owt bout my rig hes fuked it i made it on money i have well all do your best…

When I bought this in December (and up till now) I havn’t had any problems what so ever, except if I had textures or PP (idr which one it was) on Ultra every like 30sc it would stutter idk if that is what u guys r talking about, to fix this I OCed my video card. But I havn’t ad any crashes tho
