Gears of War PC Has a Small, Fixable Issue

If you picked up Gears of War for the PC this week and tried to go online with it, you should have been prompted for a title update. But due to a small problem, you’re probably stuck in a cycle of downloading the update and never quite installing it. Luckily, a fairly easy fix is available; you’ll simply quit after downloading the update, and the update will be fully installed next time you start the game up.
Here are the exact instructions, courtesy of Gamerscore Blog:
- Start “Gears of War” for Windows (from Start Menu)
- Once the game starts, press the “Home” key to open the Game for Windows — LIVE Guide
- Sign-in using an existing Xbox LIVE account, or create a new Games for Windows — LIVE account (this will redirect you to a browser window, if you choose to create an account)
- Once signed into LIVE, the user will be prompted to update the Games for Windows — LIVE version on their machine. Select the “Yes, Update Now” option
- Wait for the opening cinematic with the Epic Logo and the Microsoft Games Studio splash screen to play
- Once on the main Title Screen, press “Enter” to go to the Main Menu
- On the Main Menu, quit out of the game
- Once you quit out of the game, the Games for Windows — LIVE System Update will kick off. Wait for that install to complete.
- Once that is complete, start the game again. You will have to re-login to Games for Windows – LIVE again
Microsoft is currently at work on a new update that will rectify the problem, but this simple fix should cure the problem with minimal effort.

we need a patch out to fix the stuttering not a patch for that minor issue,i paid £30 for this game and at the moment its unplayable due to this stuttering business
why release a game on pc like that knowing they’ll be issues that you’ll have to fix later on(£30) is a rip off especially as i could have waited like 2 months til issues was sorted, but stupid me thought nah microsoft wont make a blunder, ooopsss im wrong again, dam epic an dam microsoft!
Just get a better comp. The crashing is a pain in the ass though.
cheeky git my computer is enough to handle this game cept the graphics card,i have a 8500 GT which is pants i know but it plays it at 800×600 everything max until monsters come on scene or music ect its the stuttering not the lag!i can tell the diff lol,i just built my own rig
AMD athlon 64 x2 4200+
2 gig ram
550 PSU
160 sata HD
8500 GT nvidia
LG 20x dvd drive
gigabite m55-s3
ageia phyx card
more than enough its due to bad programming.an the game dont crash for me unless its under vista, vista makes it run like a pile of poo XP pro excellent!
i have read alot of reviews that even people with power pc’s with the 8800 GTX ultra has got stuttering problems.try doing ur research b4 tellin me to get a better computer as a diff variety of people with double my specs are having the same problem.
COD4 runs like dogs tits! 1024×768 everything max………just shows you who’s more superior in the gaming bussiness activision have good games an not many programming issues!
I was thinking of picking this game up today but since there’s so many issues with it, i don’t think i will. Thanks to everyone who let me know how crap Epic are.
I have a Q6600 Quad cpu an 8800GTS 320mb along with 2gb of ddr2 ram all running on an Asus P5n32E-sli mobo and i also get the stuttering problem. It’s not constant but it do’s it quite often and is really annoying. Considering the spec of my pc it’s also very dissappointing that the game is not uber smooth. I have not yet experianced the update problem myself but it all points to some shoddy work by both Microsoft and Epic. Sorted asap plz! To anybody put off buying this game given the issues it really is an excellent game and worth the £26.
I’ve had no issues with this game. I’m running Vista 64-bit. I mean, I’m using HD2900XT 1gb crossfire, so no suprise average performance is not an issue, but I haven’t had any crashes or stuttering or anything.
well johnny lol….lucky u most forums i’ve read on a lot of peeps have the same problem….its not the update thats the problem for me its that stuttering….nor have i crashed ……..i completed this game in hardcore on 360…good game but microsoft certainly made a blunder WITH THE PC VERSION, 800×600 everything on max is fine to me but the stuttering is’nt….SORT IT MICROSOFT…U CONNING W***ERS
same problem with me..game stutters like made and im running 2 7950gx2s in sli with 4gb ram…ill stick with the 360 version
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Gears of War\Binaries\Startup.exe
look for this in windows if the nine step thing is to hard. should work fine then.
Man, you guys are lucky.
I start the game and after the short movies from the creators, I hit the menu and lag heaven starts there! It takes 5 seconds for my mouse movement to even register. Never, ever hava I had a problem with recent games on my machine.
Got a dual core 3gh system with 3G ram and a nvidia 7950 GT (512mb) and it is updated (before you ask) with XP Pro SP2 running.
I should sue their butts of because they just made me waste 4 hours trying to fix the bloody thing. (never my the 50€ i paid for the game)
So i put it away for two weeks (fat chance getting my money back) and try again. But it will be a long time before I get fooled again by those wankers/bastards at MS!
So, that took care of some steam
Yeah good thing the stuttering is a common issue, that means they’ll be working on it hopefully soon. I just bought a new set up, quad core 6600 cpu, 8800 gts 320, and 4gigs of ddr2 ram. Plays great for the most part(60fps almost always) but there’s always so much stuttering and glitching its’ really annoying. It had me worried it was my computer for a minute..
Hey everyone. I was just wondering if anyone else was having problems with Gears. I had some issues with the game completely cutting off the connection to my monitor, but fixed that problem with system updates. I was maybe five checkpoints in and the game encountered and error and closed. Now, I can’t even get to my main menu before the game encounters a problem. If anyone could maybe help me out on this it would be much appreciated. Maybe it’s something I’m doing wrong, I’m not really sure. But if anyone has any suggestions e-mail me at WhipCream990@yahoo.com. Thanks a ton.
haha cody thats a wicked setup…..its due to there programming not ur setup lol
even mines near good enough!
I’ve installed it, but it will not run. I get past the 2 splash screen, to the menu, then within 15 seconds of getting there, the program crashes out and ends. I’ve not even been able to see any of the game!!!
I have a quad Q6600, with 4GB ram, Vista 64bit, and an 8800GT with 512MB. I’ve even tried the Beta drives on the Nvidia site…..are there any patches for this game?
Thanks
We all have issues with this pre-alpha crap game. The retards @Epic are referencing here http://forums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=583169 for a driver that isn’t anymore available at nvidia.com. At the moment the thread about the hardware issues @Epic’s forum is about 51!!!! pages long. No one can say that epic haven’t knew the state of their “product” as they release to the public. This is another complete pre-christmas rip-off.
Lets buy games that are running, crysis for example
game runs fine now on my Win xp AMD dual core 4800xp, 7950gx2 1gb and 4gb ram..downloaded the latest chipset drivers for the main board and helped alot..
Ya huge rip off, yet again from microcrap. This is the 3rd game i’ve bought from them, so far they are 0 for 3. Don’t think ill be trying again after this one. I’m getting the EXACT same problem as Doodle. Havn’t even been able to enter the game at all yet… At least someone else other than me is having that exact problem, makes it more likly Epic/MS knows about it. Not that they care, if they did, theres no way this game would be out cause its DEFINATLY not rdy.. Well 3 strikes for MS, no more chances, ever..
I’ve just complained to microsoft about this game lol fuckin annoying waiting in a que for 20mins just to be told its a common problem “d’oh” my exact words was “if microsoft knew theyre was problems why the hell did they release this game with known bugs” “im very sorry mr smith” he said if we could just wait a week longer,i said that is no good my man.by this time a was pissed a he got it!lol
30 quid for a game that supposed to be the dogs tits an for people who say this game runs perfectly,ur proberbly microsofts asslickers,do yaself a favour go bum em.go complain make it known to microsoft the more people complain the more microsoft will do summat about this…….pathetic microsofts”SLAPS HARD!!!!!”
So i bought this crap today.
couldnt wait.. and now… after 20 seconds of being in the menu.. it just crashes.. i cant do anything -.- again a FUBAr action from Microsoft .. and wait do i HAVE to get a Live accpount to get patches? what silly thing is this?
nah im sure u dont have to play online to get the patches lol there is somewhere u can download em
just google search it my friend!microsoft sux donkeys dick
yeah talked to a Support guy from Microsoft Austria now.. they say they know the problem and are working on it a patch will be released and be downloadable like the service packs bleh.. but he u never know they made 100 of people buying VISTA just for playing HALO 2 so tey could actually think of getting a pay account on LIVE to downlaod the patch that u can actually play the frigged game.. -.-
well atlast there is some hope that theyll bring out a patch -.-
means my video card crashed and the fan of the video card
goes crazy with very high rpm’s. The only way to fix this is
to restart I did the latest update of windows live but its
the same.
I’m playing all the other games just fine
(crysis demo, tdu, bf2142, pes8, quake wars,
world in conflict,etc.)
Microsoft isn’t doing his homework, i guess.
My rig
P4 3,2Ghz, ATI 1950Pro 512Mg (drv 7.10 latest), 2G Ram and plenty disk space
Windows Xp with Sp2 with all updates from microsoft
I have a acer with windows 95 with a 6gig harddrive and 128mb of ram and a 32 mb graphics card. MY GEARS OF WAR WORKS SO GOOD! YOU GUYS ALL NEED ONE OF THESE SUCKERS!
Got a E6850, 2900xt, 4 giga of ram and 64 bit vista. Not lagging but its crashing like a bitch
Well….sorry to say this but I bought the game two days ago, every thing on high (DX10 included)…and no problems
AMD X2 3800+ OC @ 2.2 ghz
Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 MB Driver 169.04
2.5 GB Ram
Windows Vista Home Premium
eric haha……………the game wouldnt even install on that
lmao
ben u wanna teach me on how to over clock my 4200+ lol
My tale goes from bad to worse…I’m not only hacked off at Microsoft but I’m now even more hacked off at ASUS!!!
Since GOW was always crashing out at the menu and I had the latest graphics driver for my 8800GT, I thought I would update the BIOS on my mother board, an ASUS P5K-E WiFi. So I used their quality tool ASUS Updater from within Windows to upgrade the bios, it first cleared the bios, and then failed to download the new one. I now have a board with no bios at all! £100 board FCUK’ed! If this damn game had worked I would never have tried it!
Ian
Hi Just to say im running a X1950 pro 512meg, Dual core athlon 5600 vista 64bit, 2gig ddr ram and its so jirky the 360 version was sweet. Need a patch quick.
All that i did to OC was use Ntune, now im not saying it runs like butter….but im not getting the choppiness that all you are gettin.

Oh, and for all you running vista…..especially the 64 bit…..3 gig of ram is a must!!!!….that actually may solve your jerkiness problems (a thought at least
)…

I know it’s a bit late but when you use the Asus update utility it is best to download the new bios to your desktop then back up your current bios to a folder then use the update utility to update your bios. Doing it directly from the net is a recipe for disaster as you have found out
unlucky! There is maybe a way out as im sure that board has a dual bios setup. Check the manual to see if it do’s. As suggested above take out the cmos battery of your motherboard and see if that resets the bios back to to basic. If not you can try jumping the cmos with a couple of screwdrivers but its likely the bios is fubar tbh. If you can supply more details then maybe i can help further.
It’s running fine on my system.
Pentium 4 @ 4.2ghz
X1900XTX 512mb
2GB RAM
Vista Ultimate 32bit
I didn’t have the patience to wait for eBuyer to respond to my query about returning the board, and I couldn’t get the ASUS help desk on a SAturday, so I went round the local PC shop and bougt a new board, as I couldn’t bare the thought for a few weeks without the board until I got it sent off and replcaced/fixed. So I bought the ASUS P5K Premium today and I’m in the middle of setting it up. I’ll get the other board fixed via ASUS or replaced from eBuyer, and then sell it on eBay as the P5K-E WiFi was a great board and will sell no probs (Drop me an email if anyone wants to make me an offer)
The first thing I did with the new board was use the BIOS bases F2 ASUS AWARD Flash utility and brought the new board up to the right bios….worked a treat…I’ll not be going near it again though….once bitten….
As I’ve now build the new board, I have no way of testing the old bord as I’m not stripping it down again to get the CPU and memory….I’ll need to go with the replacement route unless that doesn’t work….

I HAVE PROBABLY STUTTERING SOLUTION:
Are you experiencing laggspikes every like 20 sec after 3-4 minutes into the games? It’s probably cause of Punkbuster, it checks ur computer every 20 sec. Uninstall it and try again. (uninstall like any other program).
I bought the game as soon as it came out, looks top notch except windows criticly errors after about 2 minutes of playing the game, right where you pick up your first set or grenades,
I’m running an AMD 6000 dualcore socket am2, 3 gig ram, x2 geforce 8800gtx a physics card and a beasty 1200 watt psu all slapped on a asus crosshair motherboard, to top it off its all watercooled, must be windows xp letting it donw. i’m not buying vista just to see if it works tho!!! lets see if this game can fly instead!!!
Mmmm. I’m a bit suspicious about your rig G4v1nnnn. Mainly because of the simple fact that it would be pretty mad choice to build a water cooled gaming rig with dual 8800s and put a dualcore AMD 6000 in it when you can get the far more powerful and more energy efficient Quad Core Q6600 for just a little more.
Money obviously isn’t a problem because you will have spent well over $300 on a completely unnecessary 1200w PSU.
Even the dual core E6700 or E6600s are a far better choice than the AMD. You can overclock the nuts out of the Core2Duos but you can get almost nothing from the AMD because its already pushed so much. You either just invented your spec or you made an appalling choice of parts when you built it.
LOL you people make me laugh, your slagging off ms when the very computer system your writing this slag off is on a ms machine
im using a dual core, 2gb ddr2, GeForce 8500 LE and i havn’t had any problems
PLUS im using a downloaded version not even paid for. Maybe the american release works without glitches? and the uk version doesn’t?
peaace out
wizard, you’re a dick
peace out
I’m stunned! eBuyer.com are taking the card back! I was expecting them to send me on my way to ASUS to replace it. Full marks to eBuyer for honouring this one! (Now I’ll chance my arm further and see if they will just refund me instead of replacing it as I bought the P5K Premium on Saturday and it’s working a treat now!)
I’ve not tried GOW again, but Crysis just blows you away with the graphics! Check it out, escpecially the water in daylight!

I must say that I’m sure glad I didn’t acquire my copy through the ‘regular means’…i.e. paying for it. The quality of this release reminds me of the Starlancerhttp://news.filefront.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif
days. A great game developed by MS and unfortunately full of bugshttp://news.filefront.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_neutral.gif
…and no patch was ever releasedhttp://news.filefront.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif
. All I can say is ‘Caveat emptor’.

I was slagging the game off not anyones rig so i dont expect the same done to mine, as you should know building a pc is a continual process, hey cheers for the info tho i’ll be sure to ugrade again, i’ve yet to try quad core, my psu only cost £80 by the way!
“my psu only cost £80 by the way!”
Eh? Where on earth did you get a 1200w PSU for £80?
My 620w Enermax Liberty cost me nearly £100.
1200W would it not be cheaper to buy a case that takes two power supplies and putting in two 600Watt ones?

Ian said: “1200W would it not be cheaper to buy a case that takes two power supplies and putting in two 600Watt ones?”
Thats what I’m going to do if I ever need more power. Luckily I’ve got a huge CoolerMaster Stacker 810 so I can stick another PSU in the bottom at some point.
The new Antec P190 case actually comes with 650w and 550w PSUs pre fitted which is pretty cool.
@CliffyB
Wow your mature. Good luck working at macdonalds..
