According to recent news, Marcus Feenix’s debut in Hollywood has been fragged beyond all recognition. The upcoming movie adaptation of Gears of War has come to a screeching halt due to budget concerns; ergo New Line will most likely not be moving forward on this film. Video game properties, with the exception of the Resident Evil movies, have not had the same impact as movies starring comic book heroes Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.  According to the IESB, “Studios have a hard time gambling $100 million dollars plus to a genre that has not been able to break out of the ‘Uwe Boll’ stereotypes.” Zing!!!

Stuart Beattie, the screenwriter behind the Gears movie, has admitted that although perceptions are starting to change in Hollywood regarding movies based on video games, they are still a hard sell.

“While there are more and more video game movies being made because there are more and more videogames being made, there still hasn’t been that one that has hit it out of the park yet,” Beattie told GamePro. “At the moment, I would say the perception of video game movies in Hollywood is: they are interested, they’re intrigued, but they’re still not completely sure if it can actually work.”

If New Line changes its mind and does indeed proceed with the film, don’t expect it to hit theaters until some time in 2009.

This is very similar to the whole “People don’t buy 3rd party games on Nintendo platforms” fallacy. Its true that 3rd party games don’t usually do well on Nintendo platforms, just like its true that movies based on video games don’t do well in the box office. The problem with both situations though is quality. If the would make a GOOD movie based off a video game, it would do just fine. Just like if 3rd parties would make a AAA title on the Wii, it would do fine.

    1) All that is needed is a good script, and gernerally one that embodies the spirit of the game. Big names won’t overshadow the fact your script sucks. I dont care how much you like “The Rock” the Doom movie was a great example (along with all the other BAD EXAMPLES) as to WHY Hollywood is affraid to spend money on a Video Game movie.

    2) You must have a decent director. Not some n00b that just made his first B movie, OR some one who clings to the B movie genre. All you’ll get is a B movie. Hell grab a good director from T.V. there are plenty.

It really make me sad when a decent game gets made into a crappy movie. I had been waiting for a DooM movie since I was about 10. I thoght it would have been the coolest thing ever. Then they finally make it and what do I get. Crap… crap that may have entertained me when I was ten, I’m not ten any more and you can’t BS me. If it’s a Zombie game, Its a Zombie Movie. If it’s a War game it’s a WAR MOVIE. Some times there are things that can be left out of the movie this is true, but once you start changing the fundamentals of the story, your just asking for it. F’ you Hollywood and yout crapy half assed addaptations.

i have completed the game and it was amazing and then when i got told that it may come out on film i got really exited and now some b**tards say that there is like a 3/10 chance of it ever happening im so annoyed. they could get a good director, a good plot and some good actors they could make a 10/10 oscar winning movie. im still happy that gears of war 2 and 3 are coming to the 360
but the movie would have of been something else.
HALO THE MOVIE IS GONNA SUCK
