Gaming Today Comment of the Week

and the winner is…

Another week has passed and it is time to pay homage to the best commenter and this week the prize goes to ManOfTeal. His comment was in regards to the news that Jeff Gordon was going to be the new cover boy for EA’s NASCAR 09.

ManOfTeal says:

NASCAR is NOT, I repeat, NOT!!!, a sport. Therefore racecar drivers are NOT athletes……

Let those redneck inbreeders actually run, with their legs, around the track for 400-500 laps and then you can call them athletes…

Some of us could not agree more with you ManOfTeal, but to quiet honest, the whole comment thread is quite funny. I often laugh at comments left on our posts, but this one made me laugh pretty heartily.

For those of you that missed out on it, you can see it for yourself here.

I’m glad you guys kept the comment section going. I think it will continue to be popular.

As far as NASCAR, it’s definitely not a sport in the classic sense, but it still takes a crap load of physical and mental stamina. I think I’d classify it as a game and a competition.

  2. weclock says:

    Is horse racing a sport?

I don’t know, I think racing (like depicted in Gran Turismo) is a sport. Perhaps NASCAR isn’t, I don’t know enough about it, but it is.

It’s a sport just as much as marksmanship and the like.

It’s about using the tool to the best of your ability.

  3. Stephany says:

Actually, Weclock, horse racing is indeed a sport. While, it is true the horses would run around the track without a jockey (anyone who has ever seen one of them fall off a horse during a race can attest to that)the horse is the athlete in that sport not the jockey. I know some will argue with me about that statement, and while I have the utmost respect for jockeys it is the horse who is doing the running and the training. I have worked with thoroughbred horses my entire life, and it is what I do when I am not here, and my family currently races 4 horses. I would consider horse racing a sport before I would NASCAR. While there is not horse racing like at the KY Derby at the Olympics, there are equestrian events – not car racing events.

Just to put the record straight, I wasn’t implying Horse racing wasn’t, I was trying to say that racing, even cars, is a sport, ala horse racing.

My response to ManOfTeal’s comments as commented under that post:

A racecar does all the work? They turn, accelerate brake and pit all by themselves? Wow, never knew that. Physical capabilities do make the difference as reaction time and endurance are very important. From slightly more reputable sources than Wikipedia (Princeton):

    - an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition
    - the occupation of athletes who compete for pay

and from Wikipedia just after your statement:

…but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.

Maybe the next time you want to exercise you mental acuity you should actually get your research from more than one source, Lest you look like an ass.

So by using a highly respected source and your own Wikipedia, you have been proven wrong. Might I point out that all respect you won from me was lost as soon as you said PWNED? You berate someone for using insults and then stoop to them yourself? Maybe it is you who needs to grow a brain.

And as an afterthought let me point out that this Pleb called drivers redneck inbreeders. Let it be pointed out that most are fairly intelligent and no more mentally deficient than you or I, and they are most assuredly not inbred. I think Gaming Today should think before choosing such an inflammatory comment as their comment of the week.

Maybe we could argue it is not a sport, but in the end Kezins is right, it still takes a lot of stamina both physical and mental. At the very least you should respect that.

  6. Spectre J says:

By the way, the Olympics Committee is not the decider of what is and is not a sport, despite what some may think.

  7. ManOfTeal says:

I would like to thank the Academy………

    And Stephany

  8. ManOfTeal says:

    Also,

I posted my thank you before I read all the comments.

In regards to Spectre J’s comment:

The part about, “but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.”

That part wasn’t there in Wikipedia when I posted my comment. Someone must have edited it, perhaps yourself? In order to make your comment valid.

And my original point still holds, and you have issues……It’s a gaming site, not the New York Post, stop being a tool and develop a sense of humor will ya?
