Games for Windows LogoBig news for PC gamers came out tonight at the Microsoft Press Event here at E3. In addition to announcing partnerships with Sega, Eidos, and THQ to provide Games for Windows Live supported titles, Microsoft also dropped a slightly more potent piece of information.

Epic has agreed to build Games for Windows Live support into Unreal Engine 3. That means that any title utilizing the high-tech engine will automatically support the cross-platform communication system.

With the pervasiveness of the Unreal Engine as a platform for new games, this is a huge announcement. If every game that uses Unreal Engine 3 makes the effort to utilize this technology, it could be exactly what Microsoft needs to push the initiative over the top.

I wonder if this means UT3 will be windows exclusive (as far as computers go). Meh, Probably. :\ I’ve got a few friends who play UT2004 via Linux, they’re gonna be pissed if that’s true.
