At some point in November, Games for Windows Live – Microsoft’s version of Xbox Live available to certain PC gamers in certain titles – will be the recipient of patch 1.2, coming on the heels of the 1.1 patch which was released in August. While Microsoft didn’t announce a full list of patch notes, they did make mention of several features, including support for offline achievements, various UI features, and the ability to see if your friends are in joinable multiplayer games.
Five big name titles releasing later this year will support GFW Live, including Gears of War, Viva Piñata, Universe at War: Earth Assault, The Club, and Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. GFW Live is going to be seeing even more serious competition from Steam Community, which won’t charge gamers for any of its features and will see a massive influx of users with The Orange Box on the verge of release.
If you ask me, GFW Live is doomed in its current form. It’s going to take quite a long time to catch up to where Steam is right now, and by that time, who knows where Steam will be.
