Gamer Petition to Stop Jack Thompson

By Ron on Friday, May 18th, 2007 at 9:13 PM PST In Gamer Life

Jack ThompsonA petition has appeared calling on gamers to speak out against Jack Thompson. Now, I’m one of the first people to support this. Jack is a menace not only to gamers, but to anyone who believes that personal responsibility is paramount in our society. Instead of blaming games, or guns, or movies, we should be blaming people.

However, these petitions rarely result in any action, unfortunately. They’re a great way to gauge public support for the idea, but not so great at producing results.

For your reading pleasure, we’ve posted the text of the petition in the full article link below. After reading it, if you are interested in participating in this petition, head over and sign it.

As promised, the full text of the petition:

To: The Gaming Community

Jack Thompson is a menace to the civil liberties of all gamers. He distorts the facts to stereotype us, and has repeatedly made unfounded, unreasonable attacks on video games, video game companies, and the video game community in general. His malicious nature is especially apparent from some of his statements, as can be viewed at http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jack_Thompson. The response of the gaming community to Thompson’s remarks has been largely disorganized, with many violent/threatening/offensive statements made, which dissuade the general public from siding with the gaming community on this issue. Indeed, this response seems only to play directly into Jack’s need for attention. Thus, to win the respect of the general public, and to stop feeding Jack’s need for attention, the gaming community at large should take the following actions:

1) Widely publicize the following quote – Instant Messenger profiles, forum/email signatures, forums, personal web sites, etc., along with a message encouraging others to do the same, and possibly linking to this petition.
“Islam promotes the killing of innocent people. The Quran requires the infidel, whether Jew or Christian, to be killed. … That’s a core essence of the religion. … Muhammad was a pirate who killed infidels and who advocated the killing of infidels. Not a nice guy. Osama bin Laden is in keeping with his fine tradition.”
-Jack Thompson
This quote is undeniably racist, and will demonstrate to the general public Jack’s unreasonable mindset in a way that video game related quotes will not.

2) Other than the spreading of this quote, simply cut off all response to Jack’s actions. Do not give him the satisfaction of any more attention. This may seem to be contradicted by the previous point, but, keep in mind, that the former is not the type of attention that even a man such as Jack will like, as it shows him to be incredibly racist. The man thrives on the chaotic media and community responses to his actions, not organized responses such as this.

Yeah, we did this two years ago – There have been tons of attempts before that and since then . Survey says that this, like all the rest, is still an internet petition and thus will have no effect at all beyond wasting peoples time.

  2. Jack Thompson says:

Gee, thanks for the attention. I was a quart low and needed that. Now I can go for another 10,000 miles! ;) Jack Thompson, Attorney

PS: Islam is not a race.

  3. Fadeaway says:

Christ, I’d laugh if the above parody of what Thompson would say weren’t such a shit joke.

PS: Islam is a religion. How would you like it if they dug up how the Roman Catholic church fleeced innocent people blind and denounced the intelligentsia who founded the day and age we live in today?

May i suggest that you research your arguments with a little more scientific rigor.
In regard to Islam, the Jews, Christians and other faith’s fared much better.
for example during the Ottoman Empire. This period saw the creation of a formal Ottoman government whose institutions would remain largely unchanged for almost four centuries. In contrast to many contemporary states, the Ottoman bureaucracy tried to avoid military rule. The government also utilized the legal entity known as the millet, under which religious and ethnic minorities were able to manage their own affairs with substantial independence from central control. (from wiki’)
Not the same you can say of the American Empire and it’s devastation of Iraq, Afghanistan, the liberty of it’s own citizens.

There is some string evidence that Violence in computer games and movies has a detremental affect on young minds but this is limited to kids from those families where communication and relationships is weak already.
As davif Byrne said “TV only affects children whose parents behave like TV characters”.
Ultimately it’s the family and parental relationships that shape the direction of our choices. If the Government put more money into health, education and family support programmes rather than tax cuts to corporations and the rich, then we would all be better off.

    Regards

The following is a remark Jack Thompson made after someone who played video games commited suicide…

“Your ‘gamer friend’ will find peace through the Lord, Jesus Christ, but sadly it’s too late for that.

There is a void in every heart. You can fill it up with the things of God, or the things not of God. This unfortunate soul chose to fill it up with combat games. The playing of these video games is masturbatory activity, meaning senseless self-stimulation. If you gamers could use a dictionary you would know that that term is not necessarily a sexual one.

The real tragedy here extends beyond the life and death of this one fellow. There are literally millions of young people and young adults whose despair is deepend by turning to the things of this world and then finding them meaningless.

All of you gamers need to put down the controllers and get a life. The utter inanity of the vast majority of postings here shows how vapid “gaming” really is. You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this “culture of death?” Of course not. Hey, let’s all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.

Let’s pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer ‘buds,’ knowing he was killing himself, couldn’t figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess.

Sad. Sad for all of you.”

That statement still makes me mad just looking at it. Does he have no soul? Can he really look at the fact that a young man has taken his own life and simply say, “It’s because he played video games?” Apparently so. Jack Thompson, you are a disgusting, vile, heartless man who sees this whole event as nothing more than a corpse for your to use as a soapbox to help you fling your crap around even further. This young man had problems, yes, but it takes an incredibly conceited individual to think you can even begin to understand his problems without knowing anything about him, much less diagnose the whole problem as enjoying video games. Your arrogance is only outmatched by your stupidity. Why don’t you go to the poor guy’s funeral and throw water balloons at his family, I’m sure that will do just as much for your reputation.

  7. Matthew Lorton says:

dude, the post above is a perfect example of Thompsons sick ways. He always uses death to further his agenda, and the worst part is he outright lies about it. He lied about the deaths of 33 people at the VAtech shootings, he said cho played videogames, and he never did…this is just sad…

i would like to see thompson behind bars for all the evil and demeaning things he has done.
