scott Game Writing Freelancer Bible PostedEver wanted to write professionally about your favorite hobby? Well Scott Steinberg, co-author of The Videogame Style Guide has a new article up at GameDaily.biz that offers some insight into just what it takes to make a living playing and talking about games.

Sternberg paints a cheery picture that is very optimistic and that is admirable but some of the issues he does not mention are:

  1. Playing games for a living makes your hobby your job and no matter how much you like it there will come a time you get burned out on the concept of having to play a game on deadline.
  2. You have to have a good way with words. The average forum board member or blogger will have a hard time fitting into the regimented and rule based world of professional writing if they don’t already have a foundation in grammar and English.
  3. Aim to be the next N’Gai Croal but settle for becoming the next Shawn Sines if it happens. Not everyone, no matter how hard they work, will become the beloved of the industry – talent and persistence are not the only factors.

There are tons of other practical things I could say but I don’t want to discourage anyone out there. Check out Scott’s piece and see if you really want to get into this crazy business.
