According to data from the NPD Group, a market research company, total video game sales rose 33% in march to $1.1 billion dollars. These numbers were boosted by strong Wii sales, despite continued availability issues. God of War II for PS2 sold 833,000 units, landing it squarely in the top spot for all software sales. Total US video game sales for the first quarter were up 54.4% to $3.3 billion.
All that money raises an important question. Shouldn’t the companies making all this money invest it back in improving the product they’re peddling? Vanguard: SOH is a great example. SOE pushed it out the door at LEAST six months early, and Brad McQuaid even admitted that it was a “financial necessity.” With billions upon billions of dollars pumping through the industry, when will companies like SOE get the message that pushing a game out early is worse for their bottom line than getting it out when it’s ready is? I guess we, the consumers, will have to make them understand.
