Game Developer Research, formed this year by editors of Game Developer magazine, has just published its results of the Game Developer Census 2007. The full report, costing $1,995, is intended for “contractors, service companies, and other entities wanting to reach out to the North American game market as a whole.” It includes a list of roughly 600 firms in the United States and Canada, as well as state-by-state alphabetical listings. Check out some numbers after the break.
Although the full report costs 2 grand, an article at Gamasutra.com gives some interesting findings:
- There are about 39,700 employees of video game developer companies in the US and 8,100 in Canada
- 46% of those creating games in the US are based in California
- 11.63% are in Washington
- 7.37% are inTexas
- Four other states have more than 1,000 game professionals working in them: New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Florida.
Company information includes “full postal address, website URL, phone number/email contact when publicly available, size of firm, and the type of development or publishing it focuses on—casual gaming, online gaming, mobile gaming, serious gaming, PC, handheld or console gaming….”
