Gamasutra interviewed Dona Bailey, the creator of arcade classic Centipede. Bailey talks about her work for Atari as the only woman in game development and difficulties women face while working in a career that is dominated by males to this day. Many of her male peers refused to believe that she could have created the popular arcade hit Centipede. After it achieved widespread popularity, it was regarded as an unrepeatable fluke.
Bailey reveals her creation process. She believes in treating programing as an extension of verbal language to produce a more artistic game. She explains how Centipede was inspired by a song from the Pretenders.
Bailey is scheduled to give a keynote speech at the 2007 Women in Games International conference.
