The thin veil that exists between fantasy and reality became slightly more transparent this morning when Harmonix and MTV Games announced that gamers rocking it out to Rock Band 2 can now order customizable assets for their “band” by visiting the new specialty shop on rockband.com.
By using the new photo creator tool equipped with Rock Band 2, you can pose your in-game characters and insert them into a variety of backdrops, add special effects and then apply the new image to your personal profile or band pages where they will be rendered in full 3D.
As if customizable profiles were not enough, the developers have gone one step further by partnering with the online printing company Zazzle which offers gamers the luxury of having their band immortalized for all the world to see. Once you have used the Photo Tool to capture your band images or logo, you can then upload them with the Merch Booth tool and turn them into buttons, key chains, posters, stickers, t-shirts, and plenty of other merchandise.
If you would like to go one step further and revel in the madness that this game is creating, you can even have your very own 6-inch figurine generated from the in-game avatar you designed in the Bandmate Creator tool. The figurines created by Z Corporation will run you about $69 while the prices for the above referenced merchandise will cost anywhere from $2 (buttons) to $29 (t-shirts) plus shipping.
The Rock Band store is also promising to offer gamers a large selection of band gear and clothing with the game’s original art. While gaming merchandise is nothing new and neither is customizable goods using your own designs, it makes you wonder just how far is too far when it comes to these music simulation games. What is the final straw when it comes to being burnt out on a particular genre?

what a waste. rock band sucks.
