Free Haze Promotion at Canadian GameStops Canceled

I hate it when things that sound too good to be true actually end up being too good to be true. Last week, the internet was abuzz about a new flyer from GameStop in Canada that said anyone who pre-ordered the upcoming Haze would have the option to return the game for a full refund within a week. It sounded like a really good (and easily exploitable) deal, but it seems the promotion will actually never come to pass. Ubisoft has now stated that there was a miscommunication between the developer and GameStop, and that the promotion has since been canceled. So if you pre-ordered Haze in Canada to get in on this deal, looks like you’re outta luck.

I don’t understand why this is a “deal” – here in Perth Australia, it’s the policy of both the Electronics Boutique and Gametraders stores to accept console games returned within 7 days of purchase in exchange for store credit. Was this promotion different in some way?
Is the policy even still available if the product has been opened? I think this deal was to allow people to play the game, and if they didn’t like it, they could get the total value of the game back in “in store” credits. Would be interesting to why they made the choice to restrict this deal, and even more so because it was Ubisoft to give the final word and not EBgames who are the ones selling it. There’s definatly more to this, but it’s not like I wanted the game anyways.
Ha Ha…I said Ha Ha!
