ps3 February Hardware NPDs: Nintendo Dominates, PS3 Outsells 360 Again

The number might not be a huge one, but for the second month in around to start this year, the PlayStation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360. Both of those systems were outsold by the PlayStation 2 which sold extremely well, but likewise, it was outsold by both the DS and Wii.

We don’t know where supply problems factor into the discussion, but they certainly could have had an impact on nearly every system on the list. That doesn’t change the fact that Sony has managed to start out 2008 in strong fashion. March and April will be much more significant months, though, with the release of Grand Theft Auto IV looming. It’ll be interesting to see how much sales increase from the game’s release and which one achieves superiority over the next few months.

As for Nintendo, what can you say? If the Wii’s run of insanely good sales is going to run out at some point, this clearly wasn’t the month that it was going to start.

February 2008 Hardware Sales (January sales in parentheses)

  • Nintendo DS – 587,600 (251,000)
  • Wii – 432,000 (274,000)
  • PlayStation 2 – 351,800 (264,000)
  • PlayStation 3 – 280,800 (269,000)
  • Xbox 360 – 254,600 (230,000)
  • PlayStation Portable – 243,000 (230,000)

    Worldwide of course the situation was far worse;

    Sony – 2m Consoles sold
    Microsoft – 500k Consoles sold

    Share of worldwide February hardware sales by manufacturer

    Nintendo – 52%
    Sony – 38%
    Microsoft – 10%

    @norbit,

    To be fair, MS only has 1 console in the race. Sony has 3. Nintendo has 2.

  3. Josh Gamestop manager says:

    To be even fairer 360s have been in short supplys at gamestops for the past few months.. This month (march) we actualy have some in stock. I don’t forsee the P3 beating 360 in march/april.

    The Wii could reign supreme if Nintendo could pump out enough consoles. We still sell out every week within an hour

    @Josh,

    I hear you, but I’m not sure how much stock I put into the “constrained supply” line from MS. I’ve seen 360s in targets and walmarts pretty continuously. If you want one, you can easily get one. They may lose the occasional impulse buyer if a specific store is out of stock, but it’s not like people are lining up at best buys on sunday mornings for the things.

    U kinda have a typo up there, it says 269,000 PS3’s were sold and 264,000 PS2’s were sold and u have the PS2’s in the #3 spot and PS3’s in the #4 spot. Last time I checked, 269,000 was a higher # than 264,000….

  6. Chris says:

    Chris, those are January’s sales that you’re referring to.

  7. Grover says:

    Erm norbit – add PS2 to those global stats would you, since its outselling most everything, and very close to Wii sales. Its current audience and volume eclipse anything around Im afraid.
