“The Flame” was actually forced upon them by record company execs… and was most unfortunately the “theme” of my senior prom. While I indeed know that Rick wrote I Want You to Want Me as basically a joke, since it is one of the more familiar songs to come from the band, my only thought was that it should have been included considering that fact. Actually, Southern Girls and She’s Tight are probably my favorite songs from Cheap Trick. If I really think about it, their whole debut album from 1977 is awesome.

There are Cheap Trick fans…

and there are those who have heard of a Cheap Trick song or two.

Dream Police and Surrender are crappy?!?

Surrender is Cheap Trick’s signature song, not “I Want You to Want Me”. If you have ever seen CT live, you would probably realize this. Dream Police and Surrender get far bigger reactions.

I have always found it ironic that “I Want You to Want Me” is the one song that non-Cheap Trick fans know. Rick Nielsen actually wrote that song as a parody of 70s love songs. They never imagined it would be popular.

By the way, their actual biggest “hit” was “The Flame”. It is the only song of theirs to ever be number one.

But come one, Dream Police and Surrender are to of the best rock songs ever! And Cheap Trick is one of the most underated bands of all time. Even the guys from Aerosmith would tell you that. They are all big Cheap Trick fans.

Mott the Hoople was on the verge of forgettable until “All The Young Dudes”, and I did not say the owe EVERYTHING to JUST David Bowie. Did you not see Ian Hunter listed as well or did you just begrudgingly skim over that part?

As far as Cheap Trick is concerned, I own almost every single album they have ever recorded, and have seen them live on 7 different occasions – therefore I think I know a little bit about what I like and dislike about them thank you very much. Plus, as far as overplayed is concerned, “Surrender” and “The Flame” (blech) beat out “I Want You To Want Me” any day of the week.

“Surrender” and “Dream Police” are cr*ppy songs? What
about “I Wany You to Want Me”? good song, but overplayed.
“Surrender” is one of the greatest rock songs ever…

The person who wrote this obviously knows NOTHING about 70’s rock. To say Mott The Hoople owes everything to David Bowie because he wrote one song for them is total idiocy. Mott was one of the best 70’s rock bands. They rocked as well as the Stones with a lyrical literacy like no other rock band. This is a band that should be in the Hall of Fame.
