Ensemble Studios Was Working on a Halo MMO Before Their Closing

You’ve probably heard the unsettling news that Ensemble Studios, developer behind Age of Empires, would be closing its doors following the release of its newest game, Halo Wars. Apparently though, an RTS wasn’t the only Halo game that the company had in the works. Gamasutra recently learned that the studio was also at one time working on an MMO set in the Halo universe. But this one’s cancellation had nothing to do with Microsofts decision to dissolve the developer; it seems the game began development in 2006, before ultimately being canceled later in 2007. All that’s left now though is a collection of concept screenshots of what might have been. Of course, “what might have been” looks an awful lot like a World of Warcraft ripoff, so maybe this is for the best.

Jesus, enough with Halo, they tried milking it to death, I’m glad they got closed down.
Yeah. Too bad Activision does the same with CoD. It was fun until the second game, now it’s just being milked dry.
That would of ruined the whole Halo theme I think.

Hey Cobalt,
congratulations on being a huge ass hole, when they shut down the McDonalds you work at next week, I’ll come and celebrate.
Please do, I’ll need comfort.
bring on the “vampire: the masquerade” MMO already! with real-time combat and with MAJOR z-axis action like that joke of an MMO “MXO”.
Anyone but me notice that screen shot has the exact same format as WoW? *cough* FAKE *cough*
What do you mean by “format” ? You mean the inventory? The radar? The text? The whole GUI? If you think WoW invented that layout, think again.
Oh and WoW is also a by-product of milking, lets not forget, children.
Plus, the picture has HDR in it, which the Warcraft engine has never, and will never, be capable of.
That actually looked like it could be fun. I’m an avid gamer,
and have been for around 20 years. I like both Halo and
Warcraft. If this had still been in production, i’d go: “Yay!”.
Too bad it got cancelled.
Id kick my dog if this was made. Seriously, there are some things you just shouldn’t do, and making Halo in the first place was one of them.
Maybe you shouldn’t own pets…and we get it already nobody likes Halo, why don’t you waste words on something more interesting to say.
Sucks that they closed it down
Looks real good to see halo as an mmo, but the thing is, that if they did release it, there be a high chance of monthly subscriptions.
Duddee, what was among those things? Creating Call of Duty 4? No one likes that either. Only reason people play it is because of hype.
CoD4 is a good game.
Halo, Halo 2, and Halo 3 are all good games.
UT are good games.
Gears of War is a good game.
Resistance is a good game.
God of War is a good game.
GTA is a good game.
WoW is a good game…
Being a sequal or a cash cow doesnt make something a bad game. The people who work on the games make them good or bad, regardless of title.
holy christ, please for god sake stop making CARBON COPY MMO’S!!!!!
im so sick of mmo’s being made using a very specific and very shallow formula… i just hope stargate worlds is good. i am an avid stargate fan and if this game blows i will seriously hurt the man in charge.
@ Bob .. Go join the rest of the casual idiots. Cod4 is not a good game its a point and click pile of crap.
Sorry .. HAD to be said.
You know the screen shots look exactly like Tabula Rasa (http://www.rgtr.com/index.html) so either it go canceled because it looked remotely the same, or some one is just jerking you chain and your giving the wrong information.
@Nach .. It has been confirmed to be halo mmo. Thank god it was cut.
Thank you, Evan, for showing me the light, maybe you should heed your own words.
It looks like all the other MMO’s out so It looks like shit, but then again it was never finished.
It woulda owned though if it was a realtime FPS MMO even if it was Halo.
I’d like some 32 vs 32 on Blood Gulch/Coagulation!
An MMO? So that means that it would have to be on the computer and not the 360, right?
