Eight Great Videogame Role Models for Women – Where is Joanna Dark on this List?

Over on Gamertell, Jenni Landa has listed what she considers underappreciated female heroines. I tend to agree with her on Lara Croft and Samus Aran being overly exalted in gamer’s eyes and I also agree that many a female gaming characters could and should be considered better role models than some, however I have to point out a few omissions on her list.
If I were to have compiled this list, I would have mentioned Joanna Dark, Alyx Vance, Jill Valentine, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil, and of course Nariko from Heavenly Sword. How could you be anymore of a heroine than her? I guess sacrificing yourself for the greater good is not considered a role model.
I am not knocking her choices in any way, mind you, because I have to agree with the majority of them. However, she could have made a more comprehensive list instead of just eight, because “eight” is just too small of a number.
Maybe I need to compile my own list.

Ha, all of these are really abstract references/games.
They need to release Septera Core on the Xbox 360. I never finished that game and I don’t know where it is either but I would like to finish it someday.
Go Marlins!!!!
Her list focuses way too much on obscure RPG games. To be a role model, people actually have to play the games and know who the characters are. As a female gamer, I’d like to see a more updated list featuring lots of different genres of games. Although I do agree that I am tired of seeing the same old characters on these lists. A few weeks ago I saw a list like this mentioning Zelda and Princess Peach- not sure how they are role models when all they do is get themselves kidnapped over and over.
Hi hi!
You make some great points, and if I had expanded the list to include other genres, I would totally have included Joanna Dark, Jill Valentine, Orihime from Bleach DS (seriously she’s too strong for her own good), Ulala (saving the world through dance yo), Heather Mason, one of the Fatal Frame chicks and probably one or two others. I just wanted to focus in on one genre.
Glad you agreed with most of my choices.
Hi Jenni! Thanks so much for making the list, and thanks for visiting the site! Always great to hear from other female gamers!
I always like to stop by Gaming Today to read the news.
