girlgaming Editorial on Girl Gaming

It’s not that girls playing video games is a bad thing, it’s the image of girls playing video games.

Or, at least this is what atheistium thinks. She wrote an interesting blog about the subject on Destructoid.com, and I’d have to say she has a point.

The image issues with girls isn’t a new issue–it’s been around since they’ve been trying to do things like, you know, vote. When it was all about being a housewife, there wasn’t much of an issue. Atheistum thinks that too much people try to make girl gamers into something like sixteen year-old giggly playthings, which, according to her, is not the case.

The funny thing is that image extends to guys in gaming, too. Why is it that we haven’t yet seen fully exposed video game tournaments here in the U.S. on television? Because video games aren’t traditional sports, nor do they have traditional sports heroes.

I don’t know if you noticed, but video games don’t make you cool. This isn’t to say that you can’t be cool and play video games, but the fat balding guy with glasses image is what you get sometimes when you get to imagine a pro-gamer.

However, this isn’t to say things aren’t changing.

wow, this is crazy how it’s ended up places. First thanks for reading my blog/rant.

The thing is this. I don’t care if you like to post sexy photo’s of yourself. Good for you, you got the body. However don’t come onto gaming websites and publish such photos and then not talk about games, play games and/or never relate to games ever. You can go onto myspace for that. Why do you want a bunch of gamer geeks gawking at your photos? I see so many of these woman come into communities and leave after a while because of 1) not getting ENOUGH attention or 2) getting found out to be a fake/wannabe.

Wow, I can see the draw, though. You’re hot girl with only a slight penchant for video games–the geek crowd is an untapped well of attention.

Yeah, I agree with you on putting up a front of liking video games just to get a few looks. That could be lame.

In my school when people found out that the most popular kid played pokemon, no one ever talked to him. I found this funny and I LMAO!!
