I’d love to see Battletoads ported to modern consoles. Forget the XBLA treatment with the prettied-up graphics and online play; just port the game and I’d be plenty happy. Anyone who’s a fan of an older game has probably wondered at one time or another how it is that companies decide to port a game. MTV Multiplayer’s Tracey John was wondering this at a Capcom demo this week, and the answer he got from associate product manager John Diamonon was a surprising one.

“To choose titles to revive, we see if we can give old franchises the modern touch, and we evaluate the fanbase and see if there’s a market for it,” he said.

One way of checking up on “the market”? Looking up Capcom games on eBay. “Sometimes we see games on eBay, and that’s how you see what games people are willing to spend $80 on,” Diamonon said. “It’s certainly not the only thing we do,” he assured me, noticing that I was scribbling his words onto my note pad. “But sometimes we look there to assess the market value of a game.”

Who’d have thought that those fake bids on eBay might play a role in deciding which games a company releases?
