EA Thinks PS3 and 360 to Tie in 2008 North American Sales, Activision Disagrees

Fanboys and analysts aren’t the only ones that like to project videogame console sales; publishers do, too. EA, for instance, recently predicted that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 would be in a virtual tie in North American sales, with each selling somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles. (Meanwhile, over in Europe, EA thinks the PS3 will sell 5-6 million compared with the 360’s 1.5-2.5 million.)
Activision has now chimed in with its projections for the home consoles’ sales in North America. The numbers aren’t as favorable for Sony as EA’s were, as the publisher believes the PlayStation 3 will sell 3-4 million to the 360’s 4 to 5 million. There’s no indication of what they believe the consoles will do overseas, but it seems likely that they would favor the PS3.
Personally, I think EA is a bit closer than Activision, but both console’s success will heavily rely on their ability to deliver new exclusive games. Otherwise, they might not see the major boost they’ve no doubt got their fingers crossed for.
There’s no way to tell which numbers are right, though. We’ll just have to wait and see, but at the very least, these will be fun to come back to next year to see which publisher had more accurate numbers.

As a US independent retailer, I see that the 360 sells 12 to 1 in my store. Also a good percentage of my customers seem to have more than 1 xbox 360.
