EA May Get Greedy With Selling Songs To Gamers

Downloadable songs for Rock Band have been extremely successful, with 2.5 million sold already. I think we all look forward to the continuation of DLC for games such as Rock Band, EA may have their sights set on selling music for other games:

What’s more, there’s no reason for “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” to be the only videogames that sell music. It’s only a matter of time before other games begin offering new downloadable soundtracks as well.

Titles like the “Madden” football series, the Tony Hawk skateboarding franchise and the venerable “Grand Theft Auto” games are well known for their extensive soundtracks. Offering gamers the ability to replace their soundtracks every few months after the initial release is not only technically possible with today’s new-generation consoles, but also on the horizon.

This sounds like a silly and greedy attempt to make money in my opinion. It would also be an unwise decision to start selling music for games outside the rhythm genre. We have come to expect good soundtracks in games such as Madden and GTA, even though the music is not a critical aspect of the game. If EA or other companies start charging for in-game soundtrack music, I’ll just use the music that’s already on my iPod. Let’s just hope this is an idea that quickly fades away. I truly love DLC for games, but companies are really riding a thin line when it comes to that subject. I can really see downloadable content getting out of control in the near future.
