EA has announced plans to release MONOPOLY as the first Hasbro-branded video game. The game will be available for the Wii, Xbox 360, PS2, mobile phones and on Pogo.com. However, this is not the MONOPOLY gamers are familiar with or one of the many permutations based on popular tv shows, comics and movies. The video game is based on Hasbro’s reimagined MONOPOLY Here and Now world edition board game which adds a party twist to an old favorite.

The MONOPOLY video games promise a fresh take on the timeless classic with accessible gameplay for players of all ages and skill levels. The all-new digital gaming edition brings a party twist and features 4-player simultaneous play, ensuring that everyone is engaged and allowing the whole family to get involved in the fun and play together. Faster gameplay eliminates downtime freeing up players to wheel and deal their way through some of the most recognizable cities and landmarks from around the world. Families can fill up their passports as they try to unlock new and never-before-seen game boards or challenge each other to fun interactive mini-games like breaking out of the jail cell and running away with all the loot. Play in offline single or multi-player mode and compete to own it all and win!

The MONOPOLY video games are slated for a simultaneous release with the MONOPOLY Here and Now board game this fall.

The crux with this, I think, will be pricing. This seems like it should be an XBLA game, not a retail game you pay $30 or $40 for.

The crux with this is Monopoly is all about the individual rules you bring in when you’re about to bankrupt to keep you going for a tiny bit longer…I like to make them suffer longer by lending them some money and then losing next turn on my 3/4 board ownership…ahem.

My point is, this is a(n un)friendly game that requires you, a board and some mates. When you add the PC, it automatically decreases the fun value of it as you’ve got to stick to the proper rule. I don’t think I’ve played an ‘interpretation’ of Monopoly more than 3 times before a new and interesting twist.

I do begin to wonder why we need to digitize everything that isn’t already. There’s a reason it worked so well as a board game for so long…

Joelteon has a point. That being said, this could go over well with the Wii crowd.

    But no PS3 support? Curious.

  4. erathoniel says:

Pogo.com games would not be too expensive. That is, if they release it the same across the entire board. Pun intended.

  5. Jonathan says:

i gotta agree with both Joelteon and Chris. board games are always more fun with other people in the room, but let’s face it, getting people together regularly can be a pain in the ass. plus a full board game can take hours, as opposed to 20-30 minutes on an electronic one. For that reason, I’ve probably played more digital versions of Risk and Catan than I have the physical versions. but yeah, this should seriously be an XBLA title (that’s worked pretty well for Carcassone, Uno, Catan, and probably Lost Cities).
