Dust Voids Your PS3 Warranty

ps3dust Dust Voids Your PS3 WarrantyDust can do a lot of things. It can trigger allergies, form little balls that you can collect, and even void a piece of expensive gaming hardware’s warranty. One reader over at The Consumerist reported over the weekend that Sony had refused to replace his PS3, claiming that the amount of dust on it constituted customer abuse. He claims the console has sat in his entertainment center since he purchased it and that the area around it isn’t excessively dusty; besides which, the PS3 is known to be a dust magnet. They took pictures of the dirty console for their records, but if he wants to see them, he’ll have to send out a subpoena for them (note: the picture to the right is not the actual PS3 in question). Now they say he’ll have to pay $150 to get his system repaired by them.

So basically, he can either pay $150 to have a someone at Sony run an air duster over it and test it, or he can just get it back and hope the dust is the only problem and clean it himself, doubly voiding the warranty. Unless someone’s spit in it. After reading the breakdown of his customer service experience, I wouldn’t put it past them. You can read the full ordeal in detail here.

  1. I Vacuum my electronic components 3X a week. It’s the only way to keep everything clean & in good working order. I wonder what the rest of this guy’s house looks like??? Probably a pig-sty.

    I would void the warranty on anything that looks like it was dipped in baby powder! :shock:

    On one of the site reporting this someone posted a link to the manual where it tells you clearly to keep it away from dust and cigarette smoke and clean the vents to prevent the build up of dust. The fact that this guy sent it in for repair with loads of dust in it means he obviously hasn’t looked after it in accordance to the instructions. This is quite clearly an extreme case because its the only one anyone has heard of.

    @norbit

    dont tell me you actually READ the manuals!
    how boring are you? i only flick through to specific things, and only when something goes wrong!

    @all

    i dont get the point of voiding the warranty over dust! just seems excessive. i mean, how many dust related errors are there?

    but i do agree that the owner has got to be one hell of a lazy slob!
    it only takes a second to check if its dusty to the point of breakdown and only a moment to clean it!

    lol Normally only if I cant figure out how to do something. I didn’t read this manual but there was a link to the relevant section posted somewhere else in response to this story.

    I thought the whole “dust voiding warranty” news item was fake, at least that’s what I read?

  6. Daniel says:

    I notice my PS3 does get a bit of dust if I don’t touch it for a month or so, but I tend to clean it off every so often either when I know company is coming over or if I’m in the mood to dust off my electronics.

    too much dust on a console is owner abuse in my opinion. Sony can’t replace consoles that people have done unordinary things too. If you are a gamer and don’t realize dust can screw up your system, I have no idea what rock you live under. I dust off my electronics at least a couple times a week.

  8. Jonathan says:

    maybe it’s just me, cause i don’t dust off anything and it still works fine. not the 360, not the wii, not the computer…and i probably just jinxed it all. damn, now i have a strong urge to dust everything.

  9. William says:

    another thing that helps is .. if you are a smoker, smoke outside. Cigarette smoke or smoke from other stuff you might be smoking can really do some damage to electronics.
