Do You Have A Flag? Pirates of the Burning Sea Contest

Flying Labs Software knows all about the cunning use of flags. They are sponsoring a contest offering players the chance to design flags and sails for the Knights of Malta and Algiers to complete the Pirates of the Burning Sea Role-Playing Story Arc missions designed by Gavin Irby.

Players are encouraged to use the descriptions offered to design their flags or show off their superior knowledge of history. The winner will have his or her flag and sail included in the game and receive a chest of booty, curtesy of Community Director, Aether.

Aether will be taking submissions until Tuesday, October 9th. For more discussion and clarification, as well as to submit your entries, visit the Roleplaying-Story Arc thread.

The descriptions of each group are listed after the break.

The Knights of Malta ran a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily. They are a branch of the Knights Hospitaller order, which was founded in Jerusalem to provide care for pilgrims to the Holy Land.

Barbary Pirates:

They were part of the Ottoman Empire, but acted with a great deal of independence. From Aether’s (admittedly limited) research, they would have flown the Ottoman flag, which is depicted to the right. If you can attest to a different flag, feel free to submit it, along with your reasons.

I must point out that is the wrong Ottoman Flag. That was the flag of the Turkish Empire from 1844 until the Republic of Turkey was declared in 1920. The new Republic decided to keep the flag and standardized the proportions in 1936.

The flag that should be used is this one,

The flag of the Ottoman Empire from 1453 to 1844.

this is an other flag of the Order of Malta, which is also known as the Maltese Cross. Today, it is a symbol of the Maltese Islands.

this is part of the Grand Harbour, the place where the Siege of Malta took place in 1565. During this siege, the Ottoman Empire had put all its attention and strength in these islands to wipe out the Knights but eventually, even though the Knight were heavily outnumbered, the Turks had one of their worst defeats.
